How would you change Olympus’ E-P1? Posted: 04 Sep 2009 09:05 PM PDT
Just look at that little bugger. Ain’t it just so cute? All jesting aside, the adorably retro piece of kit you’re inevitably peering at above rings up at $799 to $899, meaning that it’s priced way too high to be slotted in most consumers’ impulse buy category. Olympus’ E-P1 was launched with high hopes, and it pretty much held the weight of the Micro Four Thirds world on its shoulders. During our time with the unit, we found image quality to be satisfactory overall and the design to be simply stunning, but we certainly didn’t come away feeling it was flawless. For those of you who overlooked the entry-level DSLR in order to try something different, how has that decision treated you? Are you full of remorse? Could you not be happier? Facebook Pushes Widgets To Share Your Stream, Photos, And More Posted: 04 Sep 2009 07:08 PM PDT
For a social site that is into sharing, it sure has taken Facebook a long enough time to embrace widgets. Sure, they launched a Fan Box widget back in July for companies and celebs with a Facebook Page, and a few other widgets before that. But how many peopel actually used them? Now, Facebook has a new widget center that brings them all together. There are five widgets in all: a profile badge, a photo badge to share your Facebook photos elsewhere on the web, a Stream Box to share your stream, the aforementioned Fan Box, and a related Facebook Page badge. Like other widgets, you can embed these on your blog or elsewhere. The live stream widget, of course, is my favorite. You can see what it looks like at right. There is an everyone tab and a Friends tab. The Friends tab is hwat I actually see in my stream when I log into Facebook. Now I can embed that stream anywhere and expose my view of my friends’ ramblings to a wider audience. In addition to reading the stream, you can comment and add likes to items from within the widget. At least that is what it lets you do in the preview. I had trouble embedding the widgets in this post, which is why I resorted to screenshots except for the TechCrunch Page badge below (but that could just be an issue with the way we have WordPress set up on our site): TechCrunch And this is what the TechCrunch Fan Box looks like: Information provided by CrunchBase Crunch Network: CrunchBase the free database of technology companies, people, and investors Excerpt from: |
Winwatch wants RFID tags in your next wristwatch — what could possibly go wrong? Posted: 04 Sep 2009 06:49 PM PDT
Looking to simultaneously trick your employees into thinking you love them and keep better tabs on their whereabouts? If so, you should definitely look into handing out Winwatch-approved timepieces as “performance incentives,” which should be sporting an oh-so-telling RFID tag in the near future. The Switzerland-based outfit has just announced plans to patent an RFID-enabled crystal gasket that would be placed in luxury wristwatches, and while they’re pushing it as a way for companies to weed out counterfeit products, we’re sure the privacy advocates in attendance can think of far darker applications. Samples are slated to start shipping out later this autumn, which means your window to snag a non-voyeuristic watch is hastily closing. Steel ‘Velcro’ Made By Germans Supports 35 Tons, Heat At Up To 800 Degrees Celcius [Velcro] Posted: 04 Sep 2009 06:30 PM PDT
If your Velcro jacket fasteners were made of this German-engineered steel “Velcro”, you’d be able to withstand 35 tons worth of force—provided your skin and bones don’t tear first. The “Velcro”, which isn’t really Velcro but has one side with spikes and the other with steel brushes, can take heat at up to 800 degrees Celsius, which is plenty sufficient for use in cars, which only gets up to 80 degrees Celsius in direct sunlight. And if you’re interested in tearing these Velcro strips vertically (as in straight out instead of horizontally, where it’s stronger), it can hold up to 7 tons. So, a 6 ton man or a 6614 pound Hummer H2 could be suspended from a building with no problem! [New Scientist via Make] Here is the original post: |
Five Shocking Time-Lapse Videos of the Los Angeles Wildfire [Clips] Posted: 04 Sep 2009 06:00 PM PDT
After 11 days, Firefighters believe they have finally made progress battling the arson fire that has ravaged 148,258 acres of Angeles National Forest. That is a herculean feat, as these frighting time-lapse videos illustrate. In a town so tied into the film industry, it isn’t surprising that local filmmakers would turn their cameras on the fire—showing us all just how fast a small flame can rage into something so utterly devastating. Check out Fast Company for the rest of the videos. [Fast Company and Yahoo] Read more here: |
Screw Twitter, You Can Follow This Politician’s GPS Ankle Bracelet [GPS] Posted: 04 Sep 2009 05:30 PM PDT
Michael Untermeyer better steer clear of the strip clubs for the next thirty days. The candidate for Philly DA has chosen to wear an electronic monitoring anklet like the thugs get to wear. Why? Leading by example, or you know by gimmick, the candidate believes that the state can save millions by slapping these GPS trackers on nonviolent criminal defendants instead of keeping them in jail. Here is a candidate really trying to relate to all the people. You can watch where he is right now on his website. This reminds me of when my friend tried out his dog’s invisible fence collar. He understood the punishment so much more after he ran through it and got shocked in the jugular. Either way, I’d still keep my eyes on Untermeyer to see if he slips up and forgets he is being tracked at all times. Oh in case you really do track him, the site doesn’t work in Firefox. That already has to ignore about half of his voting constituency. [Philadelphia Inquirer] Here is the original post: |
Video: Nokia N900 used to control British art installation Posted: 04 Sep 2009 04:58 PM PDT
The new Nokia N900 is only a week old, but it’s already being put to some interesting uses — like this nifty little video wall commissioned by Nokia at the onedotzero adventures in motion festival in London. A custom Maemo 5 app sends messages to the display, and then the phone’s accelerometer can be used to control the animation. Sure, it’s not the most super-original phone+art installation we’ve ever seen, but it’s certainly quite pretty — check the video after the break. Dish Needs To Pay TiVo Another $200 Million [Lawsuit] Posted: 04 Sep 2009 04:30 PM PDT
To punish Dish for not complying with an order to basically stop being a DVR service, U.S. District Judge ordered them to pay about $200 million to TiVo, whose patents were infringed. What’s even funnier was that Dish had ads saying that its DVR service was “better than TiVo”, an incredibly ballsy move when a court ruled that you’ve stolen technology from the party you’re claiming to be better than. Samsung doles out 640GB S2 portable, 2TB S3 Station HDDs Posted: 04 Sep 2009 04:11 PM PDT
Whatever Toshiba can do, Samsung can do… um, equally well? Evidently that’s the game being played over at IFA, as the latter company has issued a 640GB portable hard drive of its own nary 24 hours after Tosh did likewise. The unspeakably cute S2 portable is getting a much-needed capacity bump, making the largest drive in the line 640GB. In related news, the company’s 3.5-inch S3 Station external HDD has seen its maximum storage level creep north to 2TB, though storage freaks will have to wait patiently until “early next year” in order to take one home. Prices for both remain a mystery, but if we had to guess, we’d put the MSRPs about a penny under whatever Toshiba settles on. Call it a hunch. Palm Pre 1.2 WebOS Accidentally Leaked, Showed Possibly Improved Copy/Paste [Palm Pre] Posted: 04 Sep 2009 03:52 PM PDT
The 1.2 version of Palm Pre’s webOS was accidentally leaked via Palm itself, inadvertently showing off future features like an improved copy/paste, email searching and saving images from the browser. The email search still isn’t included in Universal Search as far as the version of 1.2 that was leaked was concerned, but if you want to see the other minor enhancements of 1.2, head to the Precentral forum. They’re adding more details as they find them. [Precentral] View original post here: |
