Europe to adopt micro USB as standard for mobile phone chargers starting on 2010

Ten major mobile manufacturers in the European market, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, and Texas Instruments, have agreed on adopting micro USB as the standard plug for mobile phone chargers.

Micro USB ports will be standard across phones manufactured by the companies mentioned above, starting year 2010, which is just six months away.

Surprisingly, Apple is included in the mix, which possibly means that they are going to make an iPhone with a micro USB port. I wonder if everybody else will follow suit or this will be a European exclusive thing. Hopefully, companies can agree on one charger to power all mobile phones. They just need to standardize using one plug (i.e. micro USB) and make it auto-voltage, so you can easily find that particular charger anywhere in the world.
