Available today, the Eye-Fi Pro includes RAW image support and peer-to-peer connectivity for a direct connection between the camera and a computer, no router or Internet connection required (also known as ad hoc). Eye-Fi also announced today that all Eye-Fi card users can now select which photos or videos they want to wirelessly transfer from their camera to their computer or the Web, using the new Selective Transfer feature.

Life's just getting more and more convenient these days, huh? We wonder whether the majority of humans will soon cease to think for themselves if things start to get more and more simplified.

CrunchPad Prototype Caught Taking Off Box And Baring All [Crunchpad]

Posted: 14 Jun 2009 05:30 AM PDT

This is a rumored “extremely recent” look at a CrunchPad prototype. What do we learn? First, the demo man says the tablet will be out by this year, “for sure.” The other is that the video guy is a klepto.

The sharp, colorful packaging isn’t quite what people will see on launch day, but it’s close. Enter the demo guy again, who says it’s “almost launch day packaging.” Presumably this means Michael Arrington still has to bless each unit or anoint them with oils before they’re shipped out the door.

And lastly, while it is billed as such, this video is not a true unboxing, as the CrunchPad in this video is covered from head to toe in filthy fingerprints. This one’s been sleeping around already. Harlot. [YouTube via CrunchPad Fans - Thanks, Trooper]

Colnect Is A No-Frills Collectibles Marketplace And Wiki. Someone Wake Up David Cowan!

Posted: 14 Jun 2009 05:11 AM PDT

Colnect

The granddaddy of all venture capital funds, Bessemer Venture Partners, keeps a tally of the mega-successes it passed on in a list known as the Anti-Portfolio. In it, renowned VC David Cowan is attributed for passing up on eBay:

"Stamps? Coins? Comic books? You've GOT to be kidding," thought Cowan. "No-brainer pass."

Good news David, lightening may in fact strike twice for you because here's your chance to invest in Colnect, a community site for collectors of coins, banknotes, stamps, phone cards and bottle caps. And no, I'm NOT kidding at all.

Colnect (Collect+Connect) is a collector's community site that assists its users to organize, share, trade and sell their collectables. There are no fancy algorithms, the UI is modest—old school some may argue—and it's literally a one-man show having been founded, coded and operated by 29-year-old Amir Wald. He's still the only employee(!)

The core of Colnect is a community driven wiki where Contributors add content (collectibles), Editors make changes to existing items, and Coordinators supervise content contributions and provide permissions to Editors. Wald also employed crowd-sourcing to translate the site to 35 languages.

Colnect's catalogs currently encompass 158K phone cards, 68K stamps, 15K coins, 15K banknotes and 5k bottle caps. Users have marked 11M items so far: 6.6M collectibles in wish lists, 4M in collections, and another 800K in swap lists. Wald tells me that in the last month alone over 650,000 items were marked in the system. He plans on continuously adding categories, with upcoming candidates being PEZ dispensers, Kinder Surprise toys, baseball cards, and waif for it—barf bags. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Part of Colnect's charm is that it really doesn't try to impress you, it just aims to provide basic but critical utilities for collectors of mass-produced collectibles. Collectors can easily manage their inventory with personal collection, swap list and wish list management tools. There's also auto-matching between collectors' inventory and wish/swap lists (huge time saver I'm told). Then of course there are the run of the mill social features such as personal profiles, ratings, friends and private messages. These are all on top of the actual catalogs which are continuously updated and therefore a godsend to collectors.

All trades on Colnect are currently free of charge for now. There is however a premium membership option starting at just over $6 per month with the purchase of a one year subscription. Benefits include Custom Personal Lists, Premium Member Highlighting which helps member profiles and their items stand out, and the removal of ads across the site (AdSense and eBay ads are plastered everywhere).

So there you have it Mr. Cowan, your second opportunity to invest in stamps, coins and barf bags.

Pre gets NES emulation in Linux; our thumbs are in for a world of hurt

Sure, once you get Doom onto a device there isn’t much stopping you in the homebrew department, but we thought the implementation of an NES emulator on webOS outside of the Classic environment was worth noting — even if it happens to be astoundingly easy to pull off. All it requires is a quick trip to root on the device a compile of the FCEUltra NES emulator for Linux and bam, it’s good to go. Hit up the read link for instructions (we’re sure we’re simplifying things just a tad) — and no, the incredible appropriateness of using a Contra ROM to kick things off hasn’t escaped us.

gps golfshot GPSGolfShot offers better experience on the greens

Regardless of whether you're an avid golfer or one who just likes to tee off once a month at the greens, GPSGolfShot is able to cater to your needs. This is not a new way to strike the ball, but is instead an application that will be made available to Verizon Wireless customers on an exclusive basis, relying on GPS technology to help golfers navigate through new and familiar golf courses. Knowledge is (potential) power, and applying such knowledge ought to give you an edge over the rest of the competition if done in the correct manner as you will hold all the relevant information about the course on your handsets before you even hit the ball once.

Just how accurate is GPSGolfShot? This software is able to offer real-time yardage readings on nearly 10,000 professionally-mapped golf courses across the US, helping you making fast and right decisions before reaching the club. Not only that, you will be able to be more efficient on the course as play can be sped up by removing the need to seek out distance markers or to pace off yardage. All course layouts will be updated constantly, and the database will also feature information on new courses thanks to frequent updates. After all, most golfers these days do carry their handsets with them wherever they go, and GPSGolfShot helps you save even more by doing away with the need to tote around an additional expensive range finder or other gadget.

Other interesting features of the GPSGolfShot also include the ability to voice out distances with the touch of a button, allowing you to concentrate on the game without having to squint your eyes to adjust itself so that you can make out the writing on the screen under the bright sun. The "Measure My Shot" function enables golfers to accurately measure just how far drivers or irons travel, giving them crucial information on how to play the next shot. With summer in the US about to hit full swing, Verizon Wireless has made GPSGolfShot available on most of their handsets, among them the LG enV 3, LG Versa, Samsung SCH-u410, SCH-a870 and SCH-a930. Interested parties can get a copy of GPSGolfShot in the Media Center or Get It Now stores under the Download This! and Sports categories, retailing for $1.99 per round or $3.99 per month for unlimited use. Those who can't get enough of golfing all year round can settle for the annual subscription that is going for $34.99.

ASUS ‘Seamless Experience’ is the best conception of the future we’ve seen in the past five minutes

Are you fully prepared to live in one company’s most likely inaccurate and yet still totally awesome vision of the future? If not, check out the video after the break. ASUS tossed together its ideas into a “Seamless Experience” showing at its Computex 2009 booth. Apparently the future involves a lot of interactive countertops — a sort of pervasive Surface-lite, which presents interactive, relevant info for objects placed on it.

The tech also facilitates interaction between devices placed near each other, and can even capture data from a plain ol’ piece of paper and integrate it into the system. Sure, it’s been shown before, but we’re sure once enough companies come up with this idea independently they’ll be able to form two warring factions and fend off consumer adoption with a format war for years to come.

MGS4 engine tweaked for MGS: Rising because the Xbox 360 can’t handle it

Kojima made it very clear from day 1 that the Xbox 360 could not handle the MGS4 engine. When it was announced at E3 that the MGS franchise would be coming to the Microsoft platform I wondered if Kojima had made progress in making the MGS4 engine compatible with the Xbox 360, but that appears to be untrue.

During the latest Kojima podcast, Sean Eyestone stated that Kojima has reworked the "engine from scratch" to make MGS: Rising compatible with all three major platforms.
