How to Configure Hotmail/MSN/Outlook.com with Thunderbird and Other Similar Email Clients

Mozilla ThunderbirdI have this decade old email of mine that ends in hotmail.com. For a time I had been using Hotmail’s POP configuration to read emails. It was nice having POP access, but I’m still not happy with it. It is because I use several devices to check my emails: two computers that were setup using Thunderbird. I have to use Thunderbird because I own several email addresses and it is quite cumbersome to load the web email through the browser, then type the password.

There are several advantages why you want to use IMAP over POP. IMAP keeps thing synchronized: for example, “Read mail” on the email client is also marked as “read” on the server, deleted emails on the client gets deleted on the server immediately. Another is that, you get access to the Junk/Spam folder, which is not possible with POP – at least with my experience with Hotmail.

The only disadvantage of IMAP is that, it is a bit slower in retrieving emails than POP.

So, I was very happy to learn recently that it is now possible to configure Hotmail/MSN/Outlook.com with IMAP.

Here are the settings. The details are specific to Thunderbird, but these very settings can be used for other email clients as well.

Hotmail IMAP Settings in Thunderbird (Incoming Server)

Hotmail POP Settings in Thunderbird (Incoming Server)

Server Name: pop-mail.outlook.com
Port: 995
Username: youremailaddress@hotmail.com

Hotmail SMTP Settings in Thunderbird (Outgoing Server)

Server Name: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 587
Username: youremailaddress@hotmail.com

How to Upgrade Linux Mint 15 “Olivia” to Linux Mint 16 “Petra”

I had been using Linux Mint for a few months now and admittedly it is quite an awesome operating system – well, after ironing out some issues I have encountered. I just recently learned that there is a new distro released few days ago and I have just upgraded mine.

Looking for steps to upgrade yours? First of all, make sure you have a backup of everything.

Modify the repositories. The commands below simply changes the words “raring” and “saucy” to “olivia” and “petra” respectively in the apt sources files.

$ sudo sed -i 's/raring/saucy/' /etc/apt/sources.list  $ sudo sed -i 's/olivia/petra/' /etc/apt/sources.list  $ sudo sed -i 's/raring/saucy/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list  $ sudo sed -i 's/olivia/petra/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Then do distro upgrade using the apt-get command.

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade  $ sudo apt-get upgrade

Restart to confirm the changes.

$ sudo shutdown -r now You should be able to see the welcome screen with the new release shown.
