Apple's steel barrier of secrecy hasn't reached the United Arab Emirates, where cellular carrier Etisalat told the Gulf News that Apple will roll out a 4G "iPhone 5" later this year.

Ali Al Ahmad, Chief Corporate Communication Officer of Etisalat said to the Gulf News:

Yes, we are in talks with most smartphone manufacturers including Apple on the rollout of the 4G handset, iPhone 5 later this year. As the first telecom organization to roll out the 4G network, LTE, in the Middle East, we have already started talking to them for the handsets and chipsets in them.

So is this the case of a clueless executive who doesn't realize he's revealing secrets, or not realizing the technology for cramming 4G circuitry into the currently known iPhone form factor doesn't quite exist yet in sufficient numbers for such a popular device? And hasn't he heard that analysts say it'll be called the iPhone 4S?

TUAW also expressed doubts on this titbit news.Apple might be able to somehow pull together the technology for 4G connectivity by this Fall, but there's another possible problem underneath this unconfirmed rumor: Maybe Apple thinks that 4G coverage isn't widespread enough yet for a mainstream, mass-market product such as the iPhone.

We're thinking Apple will wait for both the hardware and a more-complete 4G network buildout before releasing a 4G iPhone. Meanwhile, there's no shortage of rumors about what the next iPhone will bring.

Steve Ballmer was so determined to get Nokia on board with Windows Phone 7, he sent a super-extended prom-style limo to pick up Nokia’s Stephen Elop and other execs when they visited the Seattle area.Elop said he was a little embarrassed to pull up to Microsoft — where he’d been working just a few months before — in the gigantic vehicle: “I wanted to get out and walk the last block.”

Other insights :

When Elop announced the Windows Phone plans to employees, he was greeted with silence.Nokia was on track to release only three MeeGo phones by 2014 — totally unacceptable to meet the threat from Android and Apple.

A new research team based in Helsinki and Silicon Valley has been assigned to think of the next huge idea “that blows away Apple, Android, and everything we’re doing with Microsoft right now and makes it irrelevant—all of it.”

Nokia had all sorts of interesting hardware sitting around on engineers’ desks because it was too bureaucratic to get anything approved. Examples include a totally waterproof phone and a a hi-fi speaker that can encase a phone to improve music playback.

And in case it wasn’t perfectly clear from the company’s repeated denials, Elop once again says that a full Microsoft acquisition was never even a topic of conversation between the companies.

The Redmond giant revealed on Friday that the final carrier delaying its roll-out has now signed off on its NoDo testing. Spanish operator Telefonica is now in the "scheduling phase" for the pre-NoDo, NoDo and SSL certificate patch updates. The sign off marks nearly four months of battles with carriers to get NoDo into the hands of device owners. Microsoft originally delivered its pre-NoDo update on February 21, followed by the full NoDo update on March 22. Telefonica and others have stalled on carrier testing to allow the update to be pushed to their devices.

"Testing is done at Telefonica in Spain for all three updates: 7008, 7390, and 7392," revealed Microsoft's Eric Hautala. "The team is now scheduling the rollout," he added, noting that Microsoft will provide an additional blog post once the update starts being delivered to Telefonica devices. Hautala also briefly touched on the recent NoDo issues with the Samsung Focus."I want to assure Samsung Focus owners who haven't received an update notification that there are many people across several companies continuing to work on the solution for your phones," said Hautala.

"We want to make sure you have a quality experience with the update," he added, noting that Microsoft won't rest until it's done. Microsoft claims Samsung has been sourcing two separate flash memory components for its Focus devices. Most focus owners have revision 1.3 of the device and are receiving updates, those with revision 1.4 aren't. Microsoft previously revealed that it is working closely with Samsung and AT&T to test and deliver an update for the affected devices.
