HTC Q1 profit triples thanks to demand for Android phones Posted: 08 Apr 2011 08:21 AM PDT HTC on Friday reported first-quarter 2011 earnings highlighted by profit that handily beat analysts' estimates. Tremendous demand for the company's popular Android smartphones such as the EVO 4G and ThunderBolt helped HTC record a first-quarter profit of NT$14.83 billion ($511 million) compared to analyst expectations of NT$12.99 billion. HTC said its first-quarter revenue grew 174% to NT$104.2 billion, and analysts believe continued strong demand for Android devices will help HTC's revenue grow up to 20% in the second quarter of this year.We have also seen that HTC's market capitalization, surpassed that of Finnish phone giant Nokia, is expected to surpass NT$1 trillion this year, making HTC only the third company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange to reach the milestone. Share of HTC stock closed down 3.33% on Friday. HTC Q1 profit triples thanks to demand for Android phones is a post from: Tech Mania Related Posts : |

Windows 8 to feature native SmartScreen file checking feature Posted: 08 Apr 2011 07:46 AM PDT Microsoft is trying hard and taking some extra steps to shield users from malicious apps with the introduction of an in built verification policy powered by the smartscreen filter.Originally a feature from Internet Explorer but now also (annoyingly) integrated in Windows Live Messenger 2011, SmartScreen is practically a dynamic list of known "illegal, viral, fraudulent, or malicious" URLs that Microsoft manually or algorithmally identifies. It uses this list to compare the link or executes a user visits or downloads, warning if there's a match. Although it's been proven highly effective to prevent socially engineered malware, it's also subject to false positives which frustrates developers to "clear their name".In Windows 8, SmartScreen appears to serve two purposes – to reactively check the file system and proactively prevent any downloaded applications from running that are unknown to the filter.Long Zheng was not able to trigger this out but those advanced users who rely on the their antivirus and firewall can turn this off at your will. This addition mechanism adds to a growing list of security-centric features and tools including but not limited to digital signing, User Account Control, Windows Defender and Security Essentials that Microsoft is building into Windows or making available for free.
