iPhone 4 64GB leaks or is it a iPhone 5 Prototype ?

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:24 PM PST

Inspite of Apple trying hard not to disclose it’s happenings to early to the outside world, leaks do tend to happen very frequently take the case of iPhone 4 and iPad 2 too.Apparently there's a 64GB iPhone 4 in hands of some random Shanzen guy who is showing it to the world. Not only he possesses the unit but has got some more units as well. What is being called an 'engineered prototype' of a 64GB iPhone 4 model seems something more than that. It can possibly be an iPhone 5!

If you take into consideration of Apple’s product cycle, it’s normally one year and this culture is never avoided at least in the case of iDevices. iPhone 4 was released on June 30th last year and there's just about a quarter year left to complete the product cycle. Why would Apple release a 64GB model of iPhone 4 just before the arrival of iPhone 5? Won't it be a complete disaster?

I beleive Apple will repeat what it did in the case of iPhone 3G. It wasn't upgraded significantly in terms of outlook and hardware, iPhone 3GS was rather all about speed enhancement. iPhone 4′s outlook might not be upgraded significantly in the next product cycle. It might rather get a few enhancements in the form of speed which may come forth as Apple A5 chip containing ARM cortext A8/A9 dual core 1GHz CPU with 512MB of RAM.

On the back of the device, it has "XXGB" marking, representing the unit as potential Apple prototypes. However, we found out that the device is very similar to the lost iPhone 4 prototype bought by Gizmodo.

The phone is real, and not hacked. It features the "XXGB" on its back. When the Micgadget folks checked the Settings -> General -> About to check the storage capacity, and it was indeed a 64GB model, running iOS 4.1. And it is not SIM-locked and is with model number of 995-6049LL.

On the back of the device, it states the Model no. as XXXXX, FCC ID as BCG-AXXXXX. That's exactly the same as the iPhone 4 prototype from Gizmodo.

Next, there are no plus (+) and minus (-) symbols on the volume buttons

Comparing with Gizmodo's iPhone prototype…

Surprisngly, there's no silver ring around the lens, look carefully.

And Gizmodo's iPhone prototype has no silver ring too.

The unit MICGadget has got is running on iOS 4.1 and they don't have a confirmation of A5 but still presence of 64GB memory makes me think too.

Some Chinese or some Japanese sources(macotakara.jp) are claiming that they've got some inside info about iPhone 5′s design. According to the source, iPhone 5 will get an Aluminum back just like the first generation iPhone. The reason being “Decision to design similar to iPod touch instead of using glass is supposed that Apple seems to stop problems which are told widely damages from scratching, difficulties of painting white and weight of glass.” Not only that, the Antenna will be completely redesigned to avoid any controversies like the ones surrounding iPhone 4.The other part of the rumor is something very much obvious. Apple would definitely redesign the Antenna to avoid antenna-gate, free bumpers and all the signal mess that has been biting and chewing the big Apple. The iPhone 5 is also said to have the new Apple A5 processor and will likely be announced in June/July.

Coming back to the point, this 64GB iPhone 4 is  now on sale for HK$13,500 (US$1,734) in grey markets of Hong Kong, according to Engadget. The owner of this engineered prototype told us that he got it from a source who has a small quantity of these prototypes. They are definitely leaked from Foxconn's factory in Shenzhen. What's more, according to the owner, he believes that the next iPhone will bring 64GB storage capacity to users. Well, we think Apple is planning to update the iPhone 4 with small upgrades, at least featuring a new 64GB model or could be iPhone 5 right ?
