Javascript tests show iPad 2 with iOS 4.3 Is Incredibly Faster Than iPad

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:13 AM PST

CNET.co.uk did JavaScript SunSpider benchmark test on the new iPad aka iPad2 running iOS 4.3 during a brief demo at San Francisco and compared them with other iOS devices and a few Android handsets. The results were pretty impressive where the iPhone 4 and iPad lagged behind both Android devices using iOS 4.2, popping iOS 4.3 with the new WebKit 2 browser engine in the devices dropped more than half of their rendering time. Here smaller the time better it is.The SunSpider test is usually a good test of how a browser will perform with "heavy" web pages with lots of content and functionalities such as Facebook. With the super fast A5 chip in iPad 2 which is twice as fast compared to the original iPad(slower A4 chip and less ram) and in addition to the 9 times more GPU processing and RAM has led to shorter time on the iOS 4.3.

CNET writes:

Incidentally, when you compare the iPad to the other devices we tested, Android phones and tablets don't come out particularly well. The Galaxy Tab is more than 3x slower than the iPad 2 in this test, and about 2x slower than the original iPad with the new software. The Google Nexus S smart phone doesn't fare too well either, at nearly 3x slower than the iPad 2. There's really good news for iPhone 4 owners out there: when it arrives, iOS 4.3 will deliver a 2.5x speed increase in this test.

The one device we'd like to test, but can't, is the Motorola Xoom. This tablet has a dual-core processor and runs the latest version of Android, 3.0 Honeycomb

With the iOS 4.3 GM seeding to devs there has been a few changes in the performance of Safari too.Gizmodo had compiled a video of the speeds but right now its removed. In loading the NY Times website in Mobile Safari, the new iOS version shows a decreased loading time of a couple of seconds when compared to iOS 4.2.1. Not a massive difference, though any speed increase is obviously welcome! iSpazio has now got another video which shows marginal to significant speed difference between Safari on iOS 4.3 and iOS 4.2.1 when browsing different websites

Xbox 360 gamers spend up to £63 a month on games in the UK

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 11:32 PM PST

Currently I am totally occupied with my Market Research project for my MBA and here is some news which found interest to what I was doing.Recently a Microsoft gaming survey that was performed in the United Kingdom and has found that an Xbox 360 gamer can spend an average of £63 a month on new games.According to Techwatch, the survey states that Microsoft questioned 251 people specifically aged between 25 and 34. A small percentage of hardcore gamers admitted to spending up to £100 a month or more on new games.

The survey also mentioned that around 83 per cent of Xbox 360 gamers will play on their consoles around three or four times a week, while 41 percent will play on them for up to three or four hours a day.It will come as no surprise to see that first person shooter games such as Call of Duty are the most popular games played, closely followed by racers and RPG's.

According to MCV Microsoft Advertising's head of research for data and analytics, Julie Forey said "Compared against the average male, gamers represent an attractive proposition for marketers,"She went on to say that, "Earning a higher wage, being advocates of premium goods, and over half playing for more than three hours each day, provides firms with a profile from which they can base their message."While this is good news from a PR perspective for Microsoft's Xbox service in the UK, you have to take into consideration that the age band that Microsoft has decided to target in this survey are one of the highest spending groups in the United Kingdom so the figures may be inflated.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 prototype leaks in the wild

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 10:59 PM PST

Sony Ericsson was named a Windows Phone 7 partner a year ago, but plans seem to have changed and Sony opted with another OS instead. But from the latest leak it shows pictures of what looks to be a Sony Ericsson prototype running Windows Phone 7 recently surfaced at Chinese blog Lizhecomb. These show a device clearly labelled as a prototype not for sale, and shows an attractive, large-screened and relatively thin slider.

The UI is clearly from a very old build of Windows Phone 7, and it has been suggested by some of our readers that this may be a scrapped handset after Microsoft and Sony Ericsson could not come to an agreement around Xbox Live after Mobile World Congress 2010. Sony Ericsson was after all one of the announced launch partners at the time. The unknown Sony Ericsson phone is a QWERTY model with full four rows of keys. The Windows Phone keys are viewable below the screen and the phone is charged with a micro USB cable. The origin of the photos are unknown and cannot be authenicated right now, but it seems to be captured by Mr. Blurycam on the usual tidy desktop we have seen leaked images from before.Sony Ericssons main focus is now on Android smartphones.

It could be that SE’s looking to try again… but probably not. You see, rumor had it that Sony Ericsson did produce a prototype sliding WP7 handset — the Julie — much like the one above, and this one certainly looks a little prototypical compared to contemporary designs. What it may add up to is Sony Ericsson and ASUS in the same boat — two WP7 launch partners that failed to launch, but each with hardware to show for it.

Sprint announcing Nexus S 4G, Evo 3D and EVO View tablet at CTIA, website goes down

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 10:36 PM PST

You might be wondering why Sprint has booked an 2 and half hour slot at CTIA later this month, you wouldn’t see that kind of event if you are just rehash the devices you’ve introduced over the last half year.Sprint is upto something big for sure.Reports from sources say that the carrier will launch the Nexus S 4G from Samsung, and judging from the name, the phone should be something akin to a Nexus S with WiMAX. It seems this one could be either the SPH-D600 or SPH-D720, both of which have recently received certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance, though the SPH-D720 is more likely; the D600 shows WPS support, which is available in TouchWiz-skinned devices but not in stock Gingerbread. You might recall that Sprint came very, very close to launching its own version of the Nexus One before dropping it in favor of the EVO 4G last year, so maybe they’re ready to do the deed this time.

Regarding EVO 3D, not much info is known about this it’s 3D-capable EVO of some sort. 2011 is certainly shaping up to be the year of 3D phones and tablets, so that wouldn’t be much of a surprise. The other unit in the mix is the EVO View, a tablet that we’re guessing will shape up to be something of a CDMA-powered Flyer. If this all pans out, it’s looking like Sprint could own this show. CES was a bit of a dud for them, you might recall — the EVO Shift 4G was the only handset announcement there — so they’re overdue. It turns out that directing your browser to now.sprint.com/nexus takes you to an landing site where you’re told that “this page will be ready soon.” Certainly sounds more likely than ever that Sprint’s preparing to launch its own variant of the Nexus S — and if our sources are correct, it’ll be called the Nexus S 4G, likely with both CDMA and WiMAX on board. Interestingly, both now.sprint.com/evoview and now.sprint.com/evo3d — the other two devices in our rumor three-pack from earlier today — redirect to Sprint’s home page rather than giving you an HTTP 404 error, suggesting they’re also real. CTIA kicks off in just over two weeks’ time where these things are likely to be revealed, but who knows? Wait and watch.
