There was so much hype about the stringent Hardware Requirements for the Windows Phone 7.To start of with the 1Ghz Processor ,Minimum 5 MP camera and other memory requirements.Taking each and every step carefully to make their Come Back in the Smart Phone Market a successful one to offer the people with a power packed phone with their Fresh New Operating System to play around smoothly.

As the phone rolled out in the US a few days ago and in the other parts of the world.Almost all of them having at least a 8 GB of internal memory (again one of the must haves for WP7 requirements list).Though 8 GB is a fair enough amount of memory for a smart phone, many of us may want to expand the capacity of the device to get a complete experience of WP7 with the SD card slot provided with the phone.

If you are thinking about buying a SD Card to add up to your Windows Phone 7 well  you might consider  reading this post before buying one.Though you might be having a SD card slot on your Windows Phone 7 device ,but before buying a card for your device you have to make sure that it’s a Windows Phone 7 compliant card or it might not work at all!!!

Recently Microsoft released an article on their support page about the SD Card limitations for WP7 phones. Here’s what they  had to say about the limitations.

If your Windows Phone 7 device contains an SD card, you should think of it as a permanent component of your phone, not as removable storage. The Windows Phone 7 operating system treats the SD card as an integrated part of the phone. This is in contrast to other devices, where you can use an SD card to increase the memory available to the device at any time or to transfer files to other devices. The phone's operating system integrates the SD card with the phone:

  • When you start your phone for the first time.
  • When your phone is reset to its original factory settings. This is called a factory reset. This is a task that is typically only performed by OEMs or MOs.

When the operating system integrates the SD card with your phone:

  1. It reformats the SD card.
  2. It creates a single file system that spans the internal storage and the SD card.
  3. It locks the card to the phone with an automatically generated key.

From this point on, the phone's operating system uses all of the available memory as a single storage space for storing applications and data. The phone will stop working properly if you remove the SD card, and the SD card cannot be read by another phone, device, or PC.

Which means once you have inserted the card (provided it’s a compliant one) it’ll be locked for the use of that device and it shouldn’t be used with any other Device or  for that matter any other Windows Phone7.And while buying the Card do make sure that it’s the right one for the phone or it won’t be of any use for your WP7.
