Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK coming November 11th, flash update hints at Android 2.3

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 03:25 PM PDT

There has been a new rumor popping out saying November 11th as the date for the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) SDK to go live which matches up to all of the rumors surrounding the Nexus S (Nexus 2 )and Samsung's event where Samsung will announce the Nexus 2 on Nov 8th.Remember that the SDK is for use by developers to make their apps compatible with this new version, so don't expect any ROMs immediately. In another news we know that there will be a flash security update coming up this November 9th we are now even more interested after seeing the new description listed on the app's market page.  Is Adobe letting us in on some Gingerbread news?

Dell offering free Venue pros to employees in exchange for their Blackberry’s

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 01:46 PM PDT

In a direct shot at BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., Dell  Inc. plans to move its 25,000 employees over to its own line of smartphones and then aggressively market a service to help other companies do the same.

“Clearly in this decision we are competing with RIM, because we’re kicking them out,” the computer maker’s chief financial officer, Brian Gladden, said in an interview.

Dell employees will be offered the upcoming Dell Venue Pro—which runs Microsoft Corp.’s new Windows Phone 7 software—in exchange for their BlackBerrys. Eventually, the company also will offer phones powered by Google Inc.’s Android software.

The switch begins next week and will save the company about 25% in mobile communication costs, primarily by eliminating the need for BlackBerry servers, Mr. Gladden said. Dell will begin marketing a service to its business clients within two weeks aimed at helping them make a similar switch.

The company is also talking with T-Mobile USA about purchasing voice minutes and monthly data in bulk, rather than individual employee plans. Minutes and data that go unused by the company would carryover, Mr. Gladden said.

RIM dismissed Dell’s move as a publicity stunt. “We find it highly unlikely that they will actually save any money with this move and far more likely they were looking for a little free publicity,” said Mark Guibert, RIM’s senior vice president of corporate marketing. “Consider all the hard and soft costs of purchasing, deploying and supporting new devices and new software inside a company.”

Services like setting up networks and managing assets offer higher margins than devices, which continue to get cheaper and cheaper, Mr. Gladden said. For that reason, he is willing to sell other manufacturers’ devices as part of the wireless package.

RIM’s hold on that business is weakening, however, as competitors like Apple Inc. take aim at that lucrative market. RIM has moved more aggressively to hang on to business customers, including offering free server software in February for small- and medium-sized companies worried about costs.

Employees that currently carry company-issued BlackBerrys will get Venue Pros with voice and data plans. Other employees will get Dell phones, but only with voice plans. They’ll be able to check email via Wi-Fi.

Mr. Gladden said his company is working closely with Microsoft and that both parties recognize the opportunity for the software in the business market.

Paul Bryan, Microsoft’s senior director for product management for Windows Phone 7, said the business market is evolving as more employees seek to use their personal phones at work. The software company thinks it can win business there, but is focusing on making sure its product appeals to consumers, he said.

“We want our phones to be appealing to individuals, and people have needs that span personal and work,” he said.
