LG Optimus 7, Windows Phone 7 DLNA feature confirmed

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 02:43 AM PDT

LG have issued a press release announcing that their new Windows phone 7, the LG Optimus 7, will feature DLNA, the wireless transfer standard that allows devices to share content across a home network. This feature was recently shown off to Engadget, who made a video of the functionality, at this year's IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany. The LG Optimus 7 is expected to be announced soon as a Windows Phone 7 device in which Microsoft and LG worked together to bring DLNA functionality to the phone.

Critics of Windows Phone 7 said that due to Microsoft demanding such strict hardware specifications, handset manufacturers would be unable to make their devices unique in the marketplace. However, LG seem to have a found a way to differentiate their devices from other Microsoft partners’ devices by bringing the DLNA standard to mobile devices. It will be interesting to see what the other manufactures are planning to add to their devices.

Ping draws over 1 million users in just 48 hours

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 02:31 AM PDT

You might be knowing about the new social feature named Ping in the latest version of iTunes 10 right ? The Cupertino, Calif., company issued a press release to announce the good news. “One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services. Cue expects the service to continue growing in coming weeks as more people download iTunes 10.Apple CEO Steve Jobs described Ping as “sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes.” Users can follow artists and friends, and find out what others are purchasing and listening to.With 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, Ping has a ready audience, although users will have to opt-in to the service after downloading the latest version of iTunes.

Several analysts thought Ping “stole the show,” while others questioned the viability of the social network at the keynote. The “social music discovery” service initially included a Facebook Connect option for finding friends, but the feature was quickly disabled. Jobs told journalist Kara Swisher Wednesday that the terms demanded by Facebook were “onerous.”

Security firm Sophos noted on its blog this week that Ping has been “drowning in scams and spams” since it launched on Wednesday. Since Ping does not feature spam or URL filtering, some have flooded the profiles of popular artists like Katy Perry. Most of the spam, appropriately, is offering users Apple products, with links claiming to offer free iPhones and other devices in exchange for filling out a survey.

Chester Wisniewski, security expert with Sophos said “If you actually want an Apple device, my advice is to go out and buy one, as filling out surveys will likely only end in tears.”

While spam appears to be coming through regularly, Apple does prevent profile pictures from being uploaded without approval. The report noted that it is “quite easy” to create bogus accounts for Ping, because no credit card information is required. While Ping is susceptible to spammers, iTunes 10 does pack a number of important security features. Sophos noted that the latest update patches 13 separate vulnerabilities in the WebKit components used to render the media suite for Mac and Windows.

Reports have indicated that is because Facebook blocked API access to Ping after the company failed to reach an agreement with Apple, as the website demanded “onerous terms” from the iTunes maker, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said.

Not all of the 1 million users are legitimate, though. Hours after launch, spammers had already begun posting links to “free iPhones” and scams.

Mozilla’s cloud based code editor Bespin now dubbed Skywriter

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 01:59 AM PDT

Back in the year 2009 the folks at Mozilla had hatched a plan to create a cloud based code editor that would also allow users to collaborate with one another. They dubbed this project as “Bespin,” deriving the name from the cloud city in The Empire Strikes Back. Now, after over a year, the project is slowly but steadily approaching the 1.0 release and Mozilla has changed the name to Skywriter. Recently they also moved the repository to the infamous GitHub, a social code repository, so that developers can more easily work on the project and collaborate with each other. I used to upload my ruby coded codes to github thanks to MBA i am kinda lost touch to Ruby programming.

Skywriter is, according to Mozilla, “a powerful, customizable HTML5 text editor.” The server version will run via Javascript, and the desktop version will be an XULRunner-based port, but all using the same key parts of the project, namely node.js.

For over a year, Mozilla has worked to offer code editing on their servers, but also give you the same functionality on your own website, via Skywriter Embedded. Bespin, or Skywriter, is also being used by Mozilla to create a new Add-on builder, The Register reports. The functionality and ability to customize the editor will allow for universal use and placement.

While this project has not received much press, the developers are hard at work in Mozilla labs creating what they feel to be a great coding solution. For yourself, you can find the repository right here, or find out more at the Skywriter homepage.

Microsoft states in the video that the "Revolution is coming" and gives a very quick glimpse of the interface.  The video at the end directs uses to navigate to windowsphone7.com. This video could also be a glimpse into the marketing campaign that will most likely bombard consumers to help raise brand awareness for Microsoft.
