Download Opera 10.52 Stable release for Mac and Windows Posted: 28 Apr 2010 04:36 PM PDT I have been switching between browsers for a while and i was just downloading the latest version of Opera for my roomie and i see Opera 10.52 being made available for both Windows and Mac versions. The most interesting to check in Opera for Mac is that it is powered by a complete new JavaScript engine, called "Carakan" somewhat similar to Firefox’s Gecko engine. Opera 10.52 also brings multi-touch trackpad support, Growl notifications, a new Cocoa based interface and HTML5 functionality for Mac users. The new Opera browser further towards Mac users is that, it is compatible with older versions of Mac computers. The linux version of it would be released some where in May end. Highlighted bug fixes since Opera 10.51
A full change log for Mac and Windows, and a nice performance chart for Mac is also available. Download Opera 10.52 for Windows Some users seem to have a crash was reported as a security issue and Opera devs have already released a 10.53 RC 1 fix for this. This build also fixes a freeze on Google Maps, and an issue with custom distributions of Opera. Apple Buys Intrinsity – chip maker Posted: 28 Apr 2010 02:38 PM PDT To gain more superiority amongs its competitors, Apple decided that it would beed the fastest chip on its mobile devices, so it has acquired a small Austin, Tex., company called Intrinsity known for making zippy versions of a computer chip often found in mobile devices. The deal, which closed late last month and was confirmed by Apple on Tuesday. It is the second time in two years that Apple has purchased a small chip company to gain critical technology for making a faster processor that uses less energy. Tom R. Halfhill, a well-known chip analyst for Microprocessor Reports
Mr. Halfhill said his industry contacts put Apple's acquisition price for Intrinsity at $121 million. Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman, declined to comment on that figure.Apple's products should handle tough jobs like playing video better than competing gear while devouring less battery life, analysts said.Chip analysts, in particular, zeroed in on the A4 chip that Apple credited with giving the iPad better battery life and more speed than similar devices. Normally if you look at the speed of mobile device chips are measured in Mhz one of the most popular ones run at 650 MHZ but Intrinsity's engineers found a way to crank that speed up to 1000 megahertz, which happens to be the same speed as the A4 in the iPad.Intrinsity has been working with a division of Samsung that manufactures chips on this speedy product. The same division of Samsung built the A4 chip for Apple, according to Chipworks, a firm that reverse-engineers and analyzes technology products. Leaks about the news started when number of Intrinsity employees had started to list Apple as their employer on the social networking Web site LinkedIn.Previously in 2008, Apple purchased another chip maker, called PA Semi, for $278 million and this would be a second one to the list.Mr. Halfhill said Apple appeared to be building its own version of the ARM chip favored by makers of mobile devices. Other chip companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm and Marvell have made their own versions of ARM, in some cases spending hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. So even Apple may even start with custom chips. Is Microsoft helping HTC to fight against Apple or is it after Android ? Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:37 AM PDT In a combat strategy to take on Apple, Microsoft(which makes Windows Mobile and soon Windows Phone 7) has announced a licensing agreement with HTC for its mobile phone patents that gives HTC access to "broad coverage" under Microsoft's patent portfolio.Financial terms were not disclosed. HTC will pay Microsoft royalties for the Android phones it sells. This comes after Apple sued HTC for patent infringement which was aimed at Google and Android.HTC is a key partner for Google in its expansion into mobile services, which has ignited a more direct competition with Apple. Analysts are already stating that this deal between HTC and Microsoft is aimed at defusing the Apple suit which according to Apple, HTC being the culprit for infringing over 20 of its iPhone patents. So this seems that Microsoft is lending its patents armor to HTC and Google combat to fight against Apple. But a statement by the Microsoft legal team implies it's merely HTC avoiding a similar infringement claim by Redmond Giant. No details have been provided by Microsoft nor HTC as to which technologies are covered under this agreement. If you look at the Microsoft's IP licensing program you can observe what might come : Exchange ActiveSync: HTC was the first Android phone maker including full support for interacting with Exchange Servers. This is almost certainly included in this licensing deal. ClearType: Technology yielding crisper display of text on LCD screens. Microsoft is now apparently claiming that Android is infringing on its patents, CNET reports and the subsequent deal with HTC, may spell big trouble for Google and the platform. So this deal may have more to do with HTC covering itself if Microsoft decides to go after Google. So Microsoft, with this deal, may be both threatening and inadvertently helping Google (if their patents help HTC against the Apple suit). This thing is getting heated up so as to what will happen in the coming few days. Other Android phone makers now must make a determination if handsets produced likely infringe on either Microsoft or Apple technology. Start Slide Show with PicLens LiteRelated Posts : |
