Google introduces local search for Android and iPhones

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 02:48 AM PST

Google has been trying out to get new features to its brand offerings to make local area searching easier and now they have introduced a new feature called “”Near me now”.The main goal of local search service's to make it simpler to quickly look up local businesses and info about them. Users can access this new feature by accessing Google.com through an Android or the iPhone and "tapping", or clicking, on the "Near me now" button once the phone provides your location.
According to Daily Tech, the new service was mainly created to address two issues for mobile device search users."Near me now" will provide information about businesses physically near you and let users gain more information on whatever they are in front of with a "Explore right here" option. By clicking or "tapping" on the latter option, users would be able to read reviews about restaurants that they are about to walk into.
There are some flaws but it’s just started and would be fixed soon. You must be running an iPhone with OS 3.x or higher and/or an Android device that is 2.0.1 or later. Google's recently introduced Nexus One Android phone will work with the new features as well. The "Explore right here" option option only works if the handset provides an accurate location to one city block, so the feature is likely only going to be guaranteed to work in large cities.

Microsoft pulls out Office from its online store

Posted: 12 Jan 2010 08:00 AM PST

Microsoft has pulled almost every version of Office from its own online store to comply with a court order requiring it to remove custom XML technology from its popular Word software starting today. All other Windows editions, as well as Office 2008 for Mac, were accompanied by the message: “This product is currently unavailable while we update versions on our site. We expect it to be available soon.”
Microsoft confirmed that the disappearance of Office was related to the injunction that came out of a patent infringement case the company lost in 2009.
“We’ve taken steps to comply with the court’s ruling and we’re introducing the revised software into the U.S. market,” said Michael Croan, a senior marketing manager, in an e-mail. He also downplayed the move. “This process will be imperceptible to the vast majority of customers, who will find both trial and purchase options readily available,” he added.
In an e-mail earlier today, Croan said only that Office would be “temporarily” unavailable, and that the suite would return “soon after Jan. 11,” when asked when Office sales would resume. In the meantime, Microsoft also told potential customers that they can download the free beta of Office 2010, the next-generation suite slated for a June release.
Previously, Microsoft had said the revised software would be ready by the Jan. 11 deadline. “We expect to have copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Office 2007, with this feature removed, available for U.S. sale and distribution by the injunction date,” said Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz on Dec. 23.Lets hope everything gets sorted out fast.
