Poll Shows Brits Still Struggling With Technology

Posted: 17 Jan 2010 05:36 AM PST

A recent survey of 1,000 UK residents conducted by Lewis PR found that we are still a bunch technophobic generally depressing and deserve our computers and mobile phones snatched from our grasp. Highlights include:

Poll Shows Brits Still Struggling With Technology

* 50 percent were unable to identify Steve Jobs (10 percent thought it was a union leader, 20 per cent of Division Two football and 20 percent had no idea)
* 11 percent could not name a social networking site
* 25 percent think the founder of World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee was the head of MI5 (five per cent have opted for the Arctic explorer, five per cent for the first British astronaut in space)
* Six percent thought a VHD – virtual hard disk – is a sexually transmitted disease
* 10 percent thought a wireless dongle was a sex toy
* Four percent of respondents think phishing is a method of fishing used by Eskimos

More positively by 88 percent knew that Bill Gates was, even if two percent thought it was one of the Great Train robbers. Daftness aside, there is a point here.

“Technology plays an increasing role in our lives but it is always striking how little information on some of its key figures, gadgets and aspects,” said Lewis PR Adeyeri Eb. “Although many people knew the right answers, a substantial minority had absolutely no idea. There is a digital divide in Britain between those who understand the importance of technology and those who are either not interested or scared by him” . [via trustedreviews]
