Dell 3330dn Workgroup Monochrome Laser Printer

Posted: 01 Nov 2009 05:27 PM PST

Why pay over £ 500 for a monochrome laser printer, when you can get a decent machine for one fifth the price? There are two main reasons: speed and operating costs. If you need your documents quickly and you want high returns from your supplies, the price of the printer itself is growing very strongly. Dell 3330dn is, one suspects, designed for small workgroups occupied who need these features.

Dell 3330dn Workgroup Monochrome Laser Printer

We can only guess what is the target market, because this fast, capable machine comes with a tray of standard print of only 250 sheets - less if you use paper 80gsm standard desktop. It’s really stupid, as if you are looking for a printer valued at just under 40ppm, it must be because you have many documents to print as part of a day. Even if these documents are short, you’ll be reloading the machine more often than you should, unless you invest in the optional tray 550 sheet second, of course.

It’s a big, square-cut printer, Dell and black with a wide footprint workplan. Even with its large size, it manages to cover the control panel for all pages it prints. The control panel itself is well presented with a line of four, bitmap and backlit LCD screen, menu controls and a numeric pad for secure printing via PIN. While this is handy, it would be more useful if combined with a USB port on front panel for appointment printing. Unfortunately, there is no such port.

There is a USB port on the back, of course, with a 10/100 Ethernet connection and a power legacy parallel so that the 3330dn can be implemented in many different environments.Pull down the front and you have access to the combined drum and toner cartridge. The clips of toner cartridge in position on the drum, as they each have different service lives. Cartridge replacement is a job two minutes and, contrary to replace the paper will not be needed often.Dell provides drivers for PCL and PostScript for Windows, Mac OS 9.2 and OS X, UNIX, NetWare, and several Linux distributions. There is also a copy of Hello and supplies Dell monitor applet. [via trustedreviews]

A.C.Ryan ACR-PV73100 Playon! Digital HD Media Player

Posted: 01 Nov 2009 11:06 AM PST

We watched a few products from the Dutch company ACRYAN. Back in 2008, he was the ACR-PV72100 Playon! Network DVR, which was a well-featured if not spectacular HDD recorder at the time. However, in May 2009’s Playon! DVR TV, Media Player devices directly as WDTV Western Digital HD Media Player had moved the goalposts away from recorders, and with his lack of support form the Playon! DVR TV simply could not keep up.

A.C

Now ACRYAN seeks to correct this with the New Playon! HD media player, and if the specifications are anything to go by it on an absolute winner. It supports all video formats in popular use, including not only the MOV and MKV, but also rarities such as ASF, RMVB and FLV, all up to 1080p on HDMI and component - and for enthusiasts home theater there is even 1080p 24 support. It addresses both Dolby and DTS (pass-through or mixed to stereo), audio codec support and extensive subtitles and offers both a wired and wireless-N with the NAS functionality, YouTube and BitTorrent. Exceptionally, it may even play media from external CD / DVD!

So far, this pretty much makes it more capable of under £ 150 media player we’ve reviewed, outstripping even the Popcorn Hour A110 and the new HD Live WDTV. Best of all, it is quite affordable, with prices starting at £ 130. However - as the unfortunate VMP30 ViewSonic Digital Media Player proven - we can not always go by what the spec sheet claims, so it’s a good thing, we’re here to let you know if it’s worth your hard - won.

The! Playon HD comes with a generous bundle. A highlight is the two-meter HiFX Evolution HDMI cable, which costs about 40 pounds on her own. There are also component video cables and composite and an AB USB cable to connect the! Playon HD to a computer. At speeds compact, glossy black wireless USB dongle supporting up to 802.11n is available directly from ACRYAN and should soon be sold in stores between the United Kingdom for £ 20-25. Now that the new Nintendo DSi LL has been made official, it is time to see a real comparison of what it is compared to her little brother is the DSi. The image above shows the systems sitting side by side. The image below (after the video) shows what looks like LL DSi compared to a box of Nintendo Wii … ie, it is big enough.

We also learned yesterday that Nintendo launched the new LL the U.S. early next year which is good news for those who want a slightly larger hand held gaming system for any reason.

The video below shows the report shows that the new DSi LL running and what it can do. It seems actually pretty good even if I am not so sure about the color choice here. [via gadgetvenue]

Tiscali Cheapest MP3 Download E-Music Service

Posted: 31 Oct 2009 06:00 PM PDT

Tiscali may be very late to the party, but this week it launched “Music for Life”, which is a major step in the right direction. Made in partnership with E-music, like most services, Music for Life deals with all major recording studios and launches with a catalog of more than 6.5 million sound tracks including people like the White Stripes, Vampire Weekend, Paul Weller and Johnny Cash.

What is most interesting however is the business model. Four packages are offered monthly:

* EMusic Basic 24 downloads for £ 9.99 per month (£ 0.42 per song)
* Plus 35 eMusic downloads for £ 13.99 per month (£ 0.40 per song)
* Premium 50 eMusic downloads for £ 17.99 per month (£ 0.36 per song)
* EMusic Connoisseur 75 downloads for £ 24.99 per month (£ 0.33 per song)

All tracks are MP3 (ie DRM free) and encoded at 256Kbps VBR with some older songs in 192Kbps. Users will find a legacy “some files encoded at 128kps, [but] these tracks are clearly marked. In sum, these prices were substantially lower than iTunes, and even the king usually cost Amazon MP3. Then again, it requires a monthly commitment, but Tiscali sweetens the pie by giving all users 50 free MP3 files of their choice when they register for a 14th day free trial of this service.
