[Germany] Munich-based metaio, a developer of visual interaction software products, is today launching a consumer-oriented iPhone application (iTunes link) and complementary website that combines the fun and usefulness of augmented reality with social networking.

The application, dubbed junaio, is billed by the company as the ‘world’s first augmented reality platform’ but bears some resemblance to what other European startups like Layar and Wikitude have been putting out there lately.

Samsung Dumping Symbian [Cellphones]

Posted: 11 Nov 2009 06:32 AM PST

So this is why Samsung announced bada. That new OS will replace Symbian starting in 2010, according to Samsung’s senior VP, Don Joo Lee. (No worries, Samsung will continue to sell Windows Mobile and Android handsets.)

But as for Symbian, the OS will certainly take a hit without a piece of Samsung’s 200 million or so phones shipping yearly (a figure based upon their expected 2009 numbers). Ouch. [DigiTimes via techblips UberGizmo]

Disney Princess Web Cam

First, I doubt this is an officially licensed Disney product. Something tells me Brando doesn’t have that kind of pull. Second, this thing is $52. I’m pretty sure you can buy a cheap webcam and put a mirror next to it for the same price. Third, wouldn’t this look great next to my Beanie Babies? Like totally! I could put Weenie and Tiny on both side of it, like protective lions! OMG are you doing NaNoWriMo? I am totally doing it and I’m doing a vampire story but about kid vampires who go to high school at a special vampire school in England. I KNOW!

And there won’t be ANY sex in it.

From the product page.

Disney Princess USB Web Cam is not only a Mirror, but also a web camera. Now, you can always look beautiful when you are videoconferencing with your friend. The mirror contains 7 LED lights surrounding. When it gets the connection, the LED lights and sound will be turned on. It can also be used as a spy web cam since it looks like a funny gadget more than a webcam.

Kohjinsha PA series gets unboxed, looks kind of hardcore

It’s sort of difficult for us to say what exactly the Kohjinsha PA is. Part UMPC, part MID and part tablet PC, this mishmash has captivated us for quite some time, and while we were able to spend a few brief moments with it at CEATEC, the crew over at Pocketables was able to snag a shipping unit to unbox.

They begin by noting that this thing is far from stylish, and while the hinge is almost laughably large, there’s something subtly satisfying about just how chunky it looks. Hit the read link to see if you agree — it’s cool if you don’t, you’re only hurting feelings.

Surfing the Road On an iPhone-Controlled Oldsmobile [IPhone]

Posted: 11 Nov 2009 06:20 AM PST

Remember that smart German iPhone-controlled car that used cameras, GPS, and lasers to perfectly run through the streets of Berlin? Well, screw German efficient engineering. That’s not how we do things in America.

Here we modify battered, crappy cars—like this 1988 Oldsmobile Delta—in just four weeks using “a few motors, potentiometers, a Compact RIO embedded controller, and LabVIEW,” which get connected to the iPhone using Wi-Fi. And then we strip out the doors for fun. And we ride it on top of its roof. Hopefully to an In-n-Out drive-in. Would you like to do it yourself? Your lucky day, Mad Max. Here’s a video tutorial:

And if that wasn’t enough, you can also drive it using a modded Power Wheels truck. America, I salute you. [Engineer Awesome via LikeCool]

Paul Carr Debates Jeff Jarvis About So-Called Citizen Journalists

Posted: 11 Nov 2009 06:11 AM PST

bc4576387ax250 1.jpg Paul Carr Debates Jeff Jarvis About So Called Citizen Journalists

TechCrunch columnist Paul Carr took to New York’s public radio station WNYC yesterday to discuss the pros and cons of citizen journalism in the context of breaking news. Carr was joined by host Brian Lehrer and journalist and academic Jeff Jarvis, a longtime advocate of citizen journalism.

You may recall Paul’s controversial post last weekend which discussed the solider at Fort Hood who tweeted from inside the base during Thursday's massacre—including posting a Twitpic of a victim and inaccurate reports of the events that took place. Carr delved into the ethical issues regarding this example of citizen journalism gone bad and its greater implications. His column sparked a tsunami of further debate and commentary about both the good and evil of uses of social media.

Carr and Jarvis battled heatedly over the journalistic virtue of witnesses reporting their real-time observations of news and whether the woman in question could be considered a “citizen journalist.” Jarvis came out swinging and it took Carr a while to start jabbing back, probably because the live interview was at an ungodly 6 AM in California, an hour which put our late-night thinker at a distinct and groggy disadvantage. But after a few swipes from Jarvis, Carr finally woke up and rallied. We think Carr won this one, but take a listen and tell us your thoughts!

Family Guy’s “Something Something Something Dark Side” trailer

Posted: 11 Nov 2009 06:00 AM PST

Everyone agrees that the first Family Guy Star Wars parody, Blue Harvest, was TV at its finest, right? It was such a big hit that Fox is going to release the second one on DVD on December 22 before airing it on TV with the hope fans will actually spend money and buy the damn thing. If the trailer is any indication of the episode’s awesomeness, some people might actually do just that. Who knows, maybe even me.

Samsung has unveiled a new monitor in Korea that is packed with features and can be used as a HDTV as well. the monitor is the Samsung P2370HD and it has 27-inches of screen space. The screen has a TV tuner and HDMI input. It has a full 1080p HD resolution and a response time of 5ms. The contrast ratio is 50,000:1 and is dynamic. Sound is provided via a pair of 3-watt speakers that promise simulated 5.1 surround sound.

The set also features picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture modes that will allow you to combine your PC desktop with live TV on the screen at once if you want. The set is priced at about $473 and should be set to ship globally in the not too distant future.
