Good news for Motorola and Verizon, it looks like the Droid is a hit. The new phone is certainly living up to the hype, and seems to be the breakaway hit of this holiday season. See the original post here: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Samsung announces Bada mobile OS, SDK sets sail in December Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:21 PM PST
Because what the world needs now is yet another mobile operating system, Samsung has announced its foray into the field with Bada. Not much to reveal at this point other than some key PR speak: the name means “ocean” in Korean, the company’s committed to “a variety of open platforms” in mobile industry and it plans this to be easy to integrate / customize based on carrier’s experience. All real news should be coming sometime in December, when Sammy is saying it’ll have a London launch event and reveal the SDK. Full presser after the break. | Remainders – Stuff We Didn’t Post (and Why) [Remainders] Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:20 PM PST Insane Graphics Card Packs 2GB Memory and Six (Yes, Six) DisplayPort Ports…Volcano Prevention Efforts May Result in Volcano Eruption…Makeshift Bike Rack Attaches to Street Signs…PC Built Inside a Classy-as-Hell Leather and Wood Chest…
Insane Graphics Card Packs 2GB Memory and Six (Yes, Six) DisplayPort PortsRumor has it that AMD is set to announce a new, and 100% ridiculous, flagship card: The Radeon HD 5870. The 5870, if the rumors are correct, will have 2GB of GDDR5 memory and a whopping six DisplayPort ports, not to mention dual DVI ports and an HDMI. Clock speed and GPU speed are relatively normal at 4800MHz and 850MHz, respectively. It’ll require two PCI-E slots, which is reasonable considering the spec excess. It ends up here in Remainders because the only source we’ve seen is a post on Softpedia, and while it’s certainly crazy, we’re not sure how big the market is for a six-port graphics card. [Softpedia via Tom's Hardware via Crunchgear]
Volcano Prevention Efforts May Result in Volcano EruptionGeologists working in Campi Flegrei, a caldera in Naples, Italy, are concerned about the volcano’s possibility of eruption, so understandably they’re doing a little drilling to figure out exactly what the risk is. Unfortunately, the seven 4-km holes they have to drill could have exactly the opposite effect from preventing an eruption—there’s a distinct risk that the drilling itself could trigger an eruption, which could well wipe out the entirety of urban Naples. If they hit magma, the sudden rise in temperature would vaporize their drilling liquid, causing an explosion which could in turn trigger an eruption. It’s a sexy and dangerous headline, but it winds up in Remainders because, well, the risk doesn’t seem all that great: 4km wouldn’t even be halfway deep enough to reach any known reservoirs of magma, so it’s probably a moot point. [New Scientist via Pop Sci]
Makeshift Bike Rack Attaches to Street SignsThe CycleHook is a dual-looped piece of metal that locks securely onto pretty much any signpost, creating two sweet parking spots for bicyclists. It’s a pretty good idea—I’m a cyclist, and I can confirm that most cities don’t provide enough spots to lock up a bike, and sometimes traffic cops get snippy when you chain up to a signpost on the sidewalk. The problem with the CycleHook is that it’s not new. Montreal, for one, has had this exact design attached to parking meters for years, and I’m sure it’s not the only city to have the same thought. On the other hand, Montreal’s parking spots aren’t pretty pink. [Wired]
PC Built Inside a Classy-as-Hell Leather and Wood ChestWe love PC case hacks. Anything you can shove a PC into, please do it, and send us pictures. There are several inviting spaces that haven’t yet been used—and this here is one of them. Rob Higardea crammed a PC into this beautiful, vintage wood and leather chest. Yeah, it’s got wires hanging out the back, but from the front? Pure class. I’d love one of my own, except that much class would probably stick out in my apartment more than a slab of anonymous grey plastic. | They’re Baaack! ElfYourself 2009 Is Now Live Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:14 PM PST
![]() ElfYourself started back in 2006, when it received a surprising 36 million views in its first year. In 2007, it took the web by storm, with a whopping 193 million views. In 2008, the company teamed with JibJab to power the site (one of JibJab’s specialities is creating customized videos like these, so it was a good fit). However, there was a significant dropoff between 2007 and 2008 — last year the site drew 55 million views. That dropoff wasn’t a surprise though: JibJab CEO Gregg Spiridellis says that the company decided to require users to register in order to share their videos with their friends, when previous years hadn’t required registration. This led to an anticipated dropoff in virality, but it also resulted in a huge jump in JibJab’s userbase, which is more valuable to the company in the long run. This year though, we can expect some more astronomical numbers, because JibJab has removed its required account registration. Instead, it’s deeply integrating Facebook Connect, which will give users one-click signin to the site and will also help ElfYourself go even more viral as videos get distributed through Facebook News Feeds. Users can make their videos and share them across the web for free. They can also pay to have their elves printed on gift cards or greeting cards, or to download a version they can store locally. Spiridellis also told us some of JibJab’s recent traffic stats: the site has 11.5 million unique visitors in October, up 229% over the same time period last year. 18 million views came from the site’s Monster Mash customized videos. Below are two of the new videos the site is offering this year: Send your own ElfYourself eCards

| Moxi Fall update comes with a lower price and a new 3 tuner model Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:01 PM PST
![]() Although Moxi hasn’t really taken a piece of our heart, it has kept its promise of updates with the third one due just before the holiday season. The most notable news today from Moxi’s new owner Arris though is a new three tuner HD DVR, which we believe is the first to break the two tuner barrier (that isn’t PC based). The new model is only available bundled with either one, or two Moxi Mates for $799 or $999. You can still buy the dual tuner version by itself which now retails for $499 instead of $799 — don’t forget, Moxi doesn’t charge service fees — and the Moxi Mate itself is now $299 instead of $399. The bad news it that the no interest payment options are off the table. The best news for existing Moxi owners is that the Fall update brings Live TV streaming to the Moxi Mate as well as new recording defaults, but we continue to wait for the ability to customize the Recorded TV list. All in all, Moxi has made much progress since we did our review, but our biggest gripe goes unaddressed, but then again we really didn’t expect Moxi to redesign the entire UI just because we didn’t like it. | Digeo outs a 3-tuner Moxi HD DVR, drops prices across the board Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:00 PM PST
Digeo has managed to stay busy despite going through an acquisition by Arris. The company just went live with a slew of updates that show the company is serious about the DVR game. First and foremost is a new HD DVR model. This boy is almost exactly like the current Moxi HD DVR except it comes equipped with three tuners that will allow you to record three separate stations at one time off of a single multi-stream Cable Card. Take that, TiVo. The new three-tuner model is perfect for the somewhat new Moxi Mate that will soon be able to utilize the tuners in a Moxi HD DVR for live TV viewing. Picture this: you’re streaming a recording from your main Moxi HD DVR onto the Moxi Mate in your bedroom but the wife fails asleep. This means you’re no longer obligated to watch Gray’s Anatomy and instead of switching to your TV’s tuner, the Moxi Mate will act just like a full size Moxi HD DVR and stream content live from one of the free tuners located in the full size Moxi HD DVR. You can even change the channel, view the guide, and timeshift live TV all over magic of Ethernet. Up to two Moxi Mates can connect to one three-tuner DVR but can access live TV only when the main Moxi has a tuner available. If the tuners are in use, the user will be notified of the conflict and given the option to cancel the recording to free up the tuner. The necessary Moxi Mate software update will be available within the coming weeks along with an update to the Moxi HD DVR that tweaks the menu structure a bit. Of course the new three tuner Moxi HD DVR can do the standard DVR functions too. Except this model allows you to record on three stations while watching a previously recorded program. With the new model comes price drops. The two-tuner HD DVR is now $499 down from $799 and the standalone Moxi Mate is $299 instead of $399. The three-tuner model is only available in a bundle pack with either one or two Moxi Mates for $799 and $999, respectively. Just like before, there is no monthly fee with any of these products. Digeo has been on a roll ever since the Moxi HD DVR was released last December. This is the 3rd straight quarter that the company has significantly updated its Moxi HD DVR product line. TiVo hasn’t done that in years.

| Video hands-on with the Dell 5130cdn, the world’s fastest color laser printer Posted: 09 Nov 2009 08:00 PM PST Yup, that gigantic Dell box contained a huge color laser printer. But to my pleasant surprise, the 100 lbs 5130cdn isn't nearly as boring and mundane as I thought it was going to be. I really don't know if it's the fastest printer in the world like Dell claims, but I do know that this printer could be a serious weapon in the hands of a comic book pirate. (I would like to think they exist)
I managed to get the printer set up after some issues with Windows 7. For some reason, this brand new printer doesn't ship with Windows 7 drivers, instead I had share the printer on another computer and then the print speed wasn't up to spec. But once Dell gave me the right drivers and assured me that I got a pre-production model and the retail version will have the compatible drivers, I was off to the races. The printer is rated at 47ppm in both mono and color and I found those numbers to be accurate. With just a random text-only PDF, I was able to get about 39ppm when printing over a wireless network and exactly 47ppm via a direct USB connection. Even when the document has a splattering of color, the speed isn't noticeably affected. But let's say you want to print a full-color comic book for some random reason. Just how fast is it then? Well, the 5130cdn managed to spit out the 38 pages in 1:38 as shown in the video above. Trust me, that's fast considering each page is a full color image around 800KB in size. Try that with your inkjet and see what you get.
The 5130cdn is available starting today for $1,549, which includes a 3 year next business day on-site service contract. Let me warn you though, if you do buy this monster, its shipping weight is 120 lbs on a pallet and your wife won't like it if it sits in the living room all evening.

| Social Networks Continue To Rally Around Twitter As LinkedIn Goes Tweet Crazy Too Posted: 09 Nov 2009 07:55 PM PST
LinkedIn will now allow you to update your status on your LinkedIn profile and then share the message automatically to Twitter. To enable to enable the cross posting feature, you just need to click the new Twitter box under your Network Updates box on the homepage and sync with your Twitter account (via oAuth). The integration works the other way as well. You can also share Tweets to your LinkedIn profile from Twitter or any other client by adding the hashtag "#in" or "li". As part of the setup process on LinkedIn, you can choose to either send all your tweets or select tweets that have the hashtag "in" from Twitter back to LinkedIn as a status update. You can also import your Twitter stream into your profile now, which is also an op-in feature. So your profile will show a "Recent Tweets" section that will include a real-time stream of your Tweets. The ability to show your Twitter stream in your LinkedIn profile no doubt provides a compelling social media context to your professional CV. As Twitter co-founder Biz Stone says in a video about the harmonious integration, "the business use case of Twitter is turning out to be very important." He adds, "The persona they create for themselves on the web is part of their resume." Stone also said LinkedIn and Twitter are as complimentary as "peanut butter and chocolate" (hence the logo).
It makes sense for LinkedIn to integrate with Twitter considering that its own status update feature isn't tremendously popular. The ability to Tweet directly to your LinkedIn profile will add a good amount of fresh content and perhaps new traffic to the site for social purposes as well as for professional interests. And perhaps the Twitter integration will breathe new life to LinkedIn's status update feature. AIM and MySpace also made similar moves by adding the two-way sync with Twitter. As my colleague Erick Schonfeld eloquently wrote recently, LinkedIn, like other social media sites and networks, is realizing that it's better to swim with the stream than against it. The odd man out in this announcement appears to be Facebook, who has yet to add Twitter syndication to its functionality for all users. It would also make sense for LinkedIn to sync with Facebook, but LinkedIn's co-founder and VP of product strategy Allen Blue says it something that the site "may consider in the future." Blue says that for now, LinkedIn is concentrating its efforts on Twitter thanks to the "great amount of business conversations" that are taking place on the microblogging platform. But LinkedIn's other founder and executive chairman Reid Hoffman, who recently joined VC firm Greylock as a partner, was an angel investor in Facebook, so it would make sense LinkedIn will play nice with Facebook in the future. When asked about the possibility of a URL shortener being added to LinkedIn's status update feature (which would be useful given the integration with Twitter), LinkedIn spokesperson Kay Luo said that would make a lot of sense and could be a possible addition in the future. Luo declined to say whether LinkedIn will be creating their own URL shortener or integrating with one of the billion other shorteners out there. LinkedIn is no doubt growing, reaching 50 million users a few weeks ago and innovative features like this should only add to the social network's popularity. And as Twitter continues to globally, this will compliment LinkedIn's considerable international presence. It's important to note the Twitter feature will be gradually rolled out over the next 24 hours to all LinkedIn users.

| Revo’s Retro Heritage iPod Dock Is A 60s Throwback With An OLED Screen [IPod Docks] Posted: 09 Nov 2009 07:40 PM PST I wasn’t alive during the 1960s, but I probably would’ve liked them better if they had iPod docks like the Revo Heritage. Granted iPods wouldn’t have been around to help enjoy the shiny OLED screen, DAB, FM and WiFi support. According to Stuff.tv, the $380 Heritage is well-built and produces sound far better than what you’d expect from a gadget looking as old as my parents. If you feel like spending nearly $400 on a nice bedside companion then this could definitely satisfy your inner 60’s child. I’m just plain gonna focus on keeping mine outta trouble. | Collapse Of Berlin Wall Recreated With 1,000 Giant Dominoes [Berlin Wall] Posted: 09 Nov 2009 06:40 PM PST
On November 9, 1989, thousands rushed through the ruins of the Berlin Wall, celebrating the unity of East and West. 20 years later, millions across the world watched as one thousand seven-and-a-half foot tall dominoes fell marking the occasion. About six months ago, those Styrofoam dominoes were sent all around to world and painted by school children and artists. Today they were reunited in a 1.5km line where the Berlin Wall once stood. And just like the wall did so many years ago, they fell to deafening cheers. [Dominoaktion and news:lite] Continued here: |
