Acer Aspire 1820PT Timeline multitouch Win7 ultraportable gets official

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 01:20 AM PDT

Acer have pushed a few new notebooks and thin-&-lights out of the door this past week, but their Italian arm have been saving something a little more special.  The Acer Aspire 1820PT Timeline is an 11.6-inch convertible touchscreen ultraportable, packing a 16:9 1366 x 768 multitouch display, 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor and optional integrated 3G.  NetbookItalia grabbed some hands-on time, and the 1820PT Timeline certainly looks

The notebook appears to be the European version of the Acer Aspire Timeline 1820P leaked two weeks ago, though packing more potent specs than that convertible was tipped to offer.  The 1820PT Timeline has 4GB of DDR3 memory, either 250GB or 320GB storage, GMA X4500MHD graphics and supports up to 8GB of RAM.

Connectivity includes gigabit ethernet, WiFi a/b/g and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, with optional UMTS/HSPA.  There are also three USB 2.0 ports, both VGA and HDMI, and audio in/out, together with a multiformat card reader, while the whole tablet measures 285 x 208.9 x 28.5-34.5 mm and weighs 1.72kg.

Both screen and trackpad support multitouch gestures in Windows 7, and there’s a stylus too which can be used for more accurate handwriting recognition.  Acer are quoting over 8hrs runtime from the standard battery, and there are various preloaded touch-friendly apps such as the company’s own TouchPortal and TouchMemo.  No word on pricing, but we’d expect the Acer Aspire 1820PT Timeline to land shortly after Windows 7 arrives later this week.

Newsmy A11HD portable media player tries hard to be special

e11d6bc106a11hd.jpg Newsmy A11HD portable media player tries hard to be specialNewsmy (or Newman, as it were) may not be a household name here in the States, but it’s good for pumping out new portable media players at a decent clip over in the Far East. Thankfully, there’s this amazing invention called the “internet,” which essentially enables folks all over the world to trade currency for product. For those interested in the ho hum player shown above — which features a 4.3-inch display (480 x 272), 720p TV output, an absurd list of supported file formats and 16GB of internal storage — it can be shipped your way for the intriguing price of $129.86. Oh, and did we mention that this thing can play “64 games?” Look out, iPod touch!

Barnes and Noble Nook dual-display ebook reader outed: $259 this week

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 01:06 AM PDT

Further details about the expected Barnes and Noble ebook reader launch have emerged, this time courtesy of the Wall Street Journal who are claiming to have prematurely spotted a full-page ad for the device.  They suggest that the dual-screen device will be priced at $259 and be called the Barnes and Noble Nook, which has to be one of the more ridiculous names for an ebook reader right now.

As well as displaying ebooks on its E Ink display, the B&N Nook will offer a keyboard, browsing options and even the ability to “lend e-books to friends” via its color touchscreen underneath.  It’s also expected to support wireless downloads, in the same manner as the Amazon Kindle, from B&N’s ebook store among other places.

As for the hardware, despite the concept resemblance that’s actually different to the Spring Design Alex announced yesterday.  Spring Design’s PR have denied that the B&N device is the same.  SlashGear will be at the Barnes and Noble event today, so you can bet that you’ll see all the news here.

Apple report latest finances: Mac sales & margins up, iPod touch sales double

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 12:58 AM PDT

apple logoApple have announced their fiscal Q4 2009 financial results, and it’s been another successful three months for the company.  Anybody suggesting that Apple’s tactics of selling relatively few expensive devices (rather than many cheap ones) will have some explaining to do in the face of these latest figures: Mac sales are up around 17-percent from the same period one year ago, while gross margin is up 36.6-percent.  That’s helped the company reach $9.87bn in revenue, of which $1.67bn is profit (compared to $1.14bn profit in Q4 2008).

After the cut, slumping iPod sales and the promise of “really great new products” by Steve Jobs

While Mac sales are more than healthy, iPod sales continue to slide.  In fact, they’re down 8-percent compared to the same period in 2008, although iPhone sales have risen 7-percent in the same comparison.  10.4m iPods were sold – encompassing classic, shuffle, nano and touch – while 7.4m iPhones changed hands.  However the bare figures don’t tell the full story: 50-percent of iPod sales went to first-time buyers, rather than those upgrading from a previous model, while iPod touch sales have doubled.

Meanwhile, Steve Jobs is quoted as saying “We've got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010″, leading to speculation about the Apple Tablet and other devices.  Unfortunately the company wouldn’t be led to explain any more about what these products might be.

Apple Gets A Little More Serious About Using Twitter

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 12:42 AM PDT

Screen shot 2009-10-20 at 12.34.03 AMWhile the various forms of social media are becoming increasingly important to brands, Apple is one company that hasn’t exactly rushed to get involved. Sure, they have a few accounts here and there, but they’re not exactly Google, with their 500 Twitter accounts (okay, it’s really more like 50). But they could be slowly warming up to the idea.

Back in March, the company started tweeting from its first official Twitter account, iTunesTrailers. They even went so far as the highlight the account on their Apple.com Trailers page. Thanks to the suggested users list, that account now has well over 1 million followers and they’re probably seeing a not entirely insignificant amount of traffic coming from there. And now they’ve added a few more accounts:

iTunesMusic

iTunesMovies

iTunesTV

iTunesPodcasts

These are all new accounts. A couple of them have just over 1,000 followers, but the other two have under 100, and haven’t tweeted yet. But it would seem that Apple wants to promote all of them now, as it has created a customized background for each account’s Twitter page, highlighting the other accounts (and its Facebook iTunes Fan Page, as well).

One account you’ll notice that Apple does not have though, is twitter.com/apple. That account has one tweet, from March 16, which reads, “I love apples.” That hardly seems like something Apple the company would say, and the account points to a Gmail account in its profile, which would seem to suggest they may be interested in selling it. But with just one Tweet in 7 months, Twitter is probably within its rights to simply close the account and give it to Apple, if the company wanted it.

(As a sidenote, there is also a Twitter account with the name “appleinc“, but it’s currently protected.)

Obviously, Apple added a bit of social media to iTunes 9 recently, by including the ability to share items on both Facebook and Twitter. But the effort is half-hearted as best. It’s not like you can share what you’re listening to, just what you’re thinking about buying, or just bought.

Apple has always marched to its own drumbeat, so it seems unlikely that we’ll see Apple corporate tweeting the way that people at Google, Yahoo, and even Microsoft do, but these new accounts could signify a slight thawing of the ice. After all, we do know that Apple does like Twitter.

ASUS throws XP Professional on Eee PC 1005HA, dubs it ‘business edition’

Posted: 19 Oct 2009 11:46 PM PDT

0bb2db106919 09.jpg ASUS throws XP Professional on Eee PC 1005HA, dubs it business edition

Alright, so ASUS’ Eee PC 1005HA is certainly decent enough as it is, but we can’t help but think that the company is stretching things a bit with its new “business edition” of the netbook. Apparently, all that’s needed to earn that designation is Windows XP Professional for an OS, and a standard 2GB of RAM, which no respectable businessperson would ever be without. Otherwise, you’ll get the usual 10.1-inch display, Atom N280 processor, 160GB hard drive, and a promised 10.5 hours of battery life — all in the very same Seashell enclosure, of course. Still no official word on a release over here, but it looks like folks in Japan will be able to pick this one up on October 20th for just over the Yen-equivalent of $700.

[Thanks, TheLostSwede]
