HTC Touch HD2 gets spec’d, rumored for T-Mobile UK

e6ccccec6cer off.jpg HTC Touch HD2 gets specd, rumored for T Mobile UK

By all accounts, HTC’s shooting to create the be-all, end-all king of the Windows Mobile dominion with its mighty Leo / HD2 / Touch HD2 / whatever it’s called — and a comprehensive list of specs published over on xda-developers would certainly back up that statement. Notable items on the list include the previously known 1GHz MSM8250 (that’s a Snapdragon, by the bye), full HSPA with up to 7.2Mbps on the downlink, a stunning 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive display (allegedly with multitouch support so that it can be upgraded to Windows Mobile 7 down the line), an integrated FM radio, 5 megapixel autofocus cam with dual LED flash, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sadly, it seems the phone’s just set up for 900 and 2100MHz 3G, continuing the original Touch HD’s bunk tradition of leaving North America out in the cold. Separately, rumors are swirling that T-Mobile UK could be joining O2 in offering the beast, and CoolSmartPhone has landed some sort of a promo shot of an HD2 branded as the “Touch HD2″ in full T-Mobile livery, so we’d say that’s a pretty strong indicator. Too bad this is all falling on deaf ears over at T-Mobile USA, eh?

BlackBerry Bold 9700 caught in wild (again)

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 02:20 AM PDT

If there’s one thing we’re not going to tire of any time soon, it’s leaked in-the-wild shots of RIM’s upcoming uber-BlackBerry, the 9700 (aka Onyx).  Spotted this time by DailyMobile.se, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 isn’t offering up any new secrets this time around, but it’s certainly looking slick with its full QWERTY keyboard, bright display and optical trackpad.

As we read in a preview of the Bold 9700 last week, this could well be RIM’s best BlackBerry to date.  The keyboard and responsive trackpad were both praised, as we general build and the overall feel of the 9700, leading them to describe it “the finest BlackBerry ever crafted”.

The rest of us will have to wait a little longer to get our hands on the 9700, however, with a full retail launch not expected until November.  That’s based on a broken T-Mobile USA embargo, set to lift in early November, which suggests the UMA-supporting smartphone will drop that month.

Palm webOS 1.2.1 restores iTunes sync, adds photo support

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 02:12 AM PDT

palm webos 1 2 1Our friends over at My Pre have flagged up that, as of this weekend, Palm have pushed out webOS 1.2.1.  The new firmware – which comes but a week after 1.2.0 saw its own launch – tweaks Exchange support for increased stability, but the biggest difference is that it restores iTunes 9.0.1 synchronization, something which Apple “broke” in their latest media app update.

Just to show that it isn’t merely a case of treading on Apple’s toes for the sake of it, Palm have also bolstered the media sync functionality by now supporting photo album sync.  Albums are transferred between the Pre and iTunes, and their folder structure maintained.  Full list of changes over at MyPre.

Active Media Aviator 312 SSDs use SuperSpeed USB 3.0

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 01:58 AM PDT

“SuperSpeed” USB 3.0 isn’t expected to make a mark on shipping devices until next year, but that hasn’t stopped Active Media from unveiling their latest range of external SSDs.  As you might imagine, the Active Media Aviator 312 line each supports USB 3.0 connectivity, as well as offering 16, 32 or 64GB of high-speed storage space.

Thanks to USB 3.0, the new SSDs can boast transfer speeds of up to 4.8Gbits/sec, though of course that’s theoretical rather than what you’ll likely see in practice.  Still, Active Media say it’s good enough to offer 240Mb/s read speeds and 160Mb/s write speeds; that’ll shuffle a 25GB high-definition movie from your PC to the drive in about two minutes.

The drives themselves are less than 3-inches long and 0.2-inches thick, are USB bus powered, and backward compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.  They’ll begin shipping this quarter, at $89 for the 16GB, $119 for the 32GB and $209 for the 64GB.

Press Release:

Active Media Products Announces Aviator 312 Line of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 External SSDs

Ultra-Small 16GB, 32GB and 64GB SSDs Support up to 240MB/sec Read Speeds and up to 160MB/sec Write Speeds

Fremont, California – October 5, 2009 – Active Media Products, manufacturer of SSDs and innovative USB drives, today announced the Aviator 312 line of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 external SSDs.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 supports transfer speeds up to 4.8Gbits/sec — ten times faster than USB 2.0. A312 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 external SSDs take advantage of USB 3.0’s massive bandwidth, delivering unprecedented transfer speeds in an extremely compact mobile flash storage device. Measuring less than 3 inches long and only 0.2 inches thin, the A312 is smaller than a credit card and is designed to fit in a pocket. A312 SSDs can save a 25GB full-length HD movie in about two minutes. What used to take an hour to save will take only seconds with the A312 thanks to its scorching write speeds of up to 160MB/s and read speeds up to 240MB/s..

Aviator 312 SSDs are designed for external use, and include a carrying pouch and a USB 3.0 Micro-B cable for connection to any USB port. The 312 is fully backward compatible; it works in any USB 2.0 or 1.1 port, but requires a SuperSpeed port to reach its full performance capabilities. Unlike many other high speed external storage devices, the A312 does not require a separate power source. It draws all the power it needs directly from the USB bus. The A312 will be offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities.

Jerry Thomson, vice president of sales at Active Media Products commented, “Aviator 312 SSDs are a ground-breaking product with performance that is eight to ten times faster than today’s fastest USB 2.0 flash drives. For anyone who doesn’t have hours to waste copying large files there’s nothing that comes close to the Aviator 312’s speed”. Aviator 312 SSDs will begin shipping this quarter through Amazon at expected retail prices of $89, $119 and $209 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models respectively.

Flash 10.1 unveiled: smartphone betas coming, HD GPU acceleration added

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 01:49 AM PDT

Adobe have upgraded their Flash offensive, with the news this week that the next version – Flash 10.1 – will run across not only desktop but mobile and smartphone platforms.  Taking advantage of the Open Screen Project (OSP), the new version will arrive as a Windows Mobile and webOS beta before the year is out, while early in 2010 we’ll get Android and Symbian versions.  Finally, while there’s no release date for 10.1 yet given, RIM have signed up to the OSP meaning BlackBerry devices will also get Flash support.

Yammer 2.0 For The iPhone Finally Pushes Past The App Store Watchmen

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 01:40 AM PDT

-1It seems like we’ve all been waiting forever for the new version of Yammer’s iPhone app, version 2.0. And we really have, it had been about a month and a half since we announced it was sitting in the App Store, waiting approval. But today, finally, it’s here — and it’s great.

The big addition here is Push Notifications. This is really a key feature since you now can see whenever someone in your network says something without having to open the app. And there are Push settings to allow you to see all messages, replies to you, direct messages, “liked” items, bookmarked items, events, and editorial items — and combinations of any of those. You can also set whether or a not a sound plays when the notification comes in (it seems to say “Yam”), and set “quiet” times; times when you don’t want to get any notifications (such as at night).

Here’s a little refresher of the other new features:

  • A completely revamped compose area, including the auto-saving of drafts
  • A landscape mode option
  • A new camera option to attach images to Yammer messages
  • A new section to see replies to you
  • Much better performance since old messages are now cached
  • The ability to see conversation threads

The app remains free. If you use Yammer and have an iPhone, this is clearly a must have. You can find it here.

AT&T Samsung Mythic & Flight, Pantech Reveal & Impact all get Opera browser

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 01:25 AM PDT

If you fancy a new phone from AT&T, but aren’t too fussed about Windows Mobile 6.5, then the carrier has four more options for you to choose from.  Left to right you’re looking at the Samsung Mythic, the Samsung Flight and the Pantech Reveal, which offer differing combinations of full touchscreen and hardware keyboard.  Meanwhile there’s also the Pantech Impact, not pictured, with an OLED touchscreen and full QWERTY.

att samsung mythic samsung flight pantech reveal 540x382

The Samsung Mythic packs a 3.3-inch touchscreen and the company’s TouchWiz UI, together with AT&T Mobile TV and AT&T Navigator.  As for the Samsung Flight, that has a smaller touchscreen but hides a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard which, AT&T claim, is just the right size for one-handed use.

Meanwhile over at Pantech, their Reveal has both a numeric keypad on the outside and a QWERTY ‘board underneath, together with a smaller display than either of the Samsung handsets.  It’s 3G, has Navigator and GPS, and both the keyboards are active at the same time meaning you won’t need to reach for the Fn button to add strings of numbers to an email.

Finally, the Pantech Impact has us intrigued, with a “new form factor”, OLED touchscreen and haptic feedback.  It flips out sideways to reveal a QWERTY keyboard and second display, and has triband 3G.  Like all four of the phones, the Impact has AT&T’s new mobile browser – based on Opera – which promises full HTML access together with sliced-up location-aware and topical information windows.

The Mythic will arrive next month for $199.99 after a $50 rebate, while the Flight is $99.99, also next month and after a rebate; there are no prices for the two Pantech handsets.  However we do know that the Reveal will drop on October 18th, in red and blue, while the Impact will come in pink and blue; no word on the latter’s availability, though.

Press Release:

The Flight, available in red and silver color options, will be available in November.

New AT&T Mobile Browser

Plus, it gives you easy, one-click access to the tools and content you find most valuable.”

AT&T’s new att.net mobile browser gives customers three windows to the Web. From the homepage, users can easily browse the global Internet as well as assign bookmarks and shortcuts or set other preferences so they have quick access to their favorite content. A second window gives users location-aware local news and weather; one-click results for nearby restaurants, nightlife venues, ATMs and other points of interest; and access to maps, driving directions and traffic information. A third window delivers the latest headlines from popular news, sports and entertainment sites.

Additionally, customers accessing att.net from their PC can customize their mobile att.net page by sending shortcuts to popular Web sites through a “Send to Mobile” feature.

Toshiba’s Cell-Powered REGZA 55X1 LCD TV Can Record and Display 8 Channels At Once [HDTVs]

Posted: 05 Oct 2009 01:21 AM PDT

6a25fb3af955X1 2.jpg Toshibas Cell Powered REGZA 55X1 LCD TV Can Record and Display 8 Channels At Once [HDTVs]Toshiba’s first TV with the PS3 Cell processor it helped develop has seriously kick-ass specs. For starters: The 55-incher’s LED backlighting divides the 240Hz display into 512 individually controlled areas, and has a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1.

The Cell processor also provides self-congruency for improved image quality at the edge of the picture, enhanced color and brightness balance, and a super-high luminance of 1250cd/m². A 7-speaker sound bar is attached underneath the display, and network functionality includes DLNA support, and an HD Web browser based on Opera.

The Cell chip is housed in an external box about the site of an older Blu-ray player. That’s also where a 3TB hard disk is installed to allow the TV to time-shift up to 26 hours of programs from up to 8 channels simultaneously. (1TB of storage is reserved for longer-term recordings). Another neat visual trick: the 55X1 can show eight channels on screen at the same time—and step through each without the delay common with rival HDTVs.

6391ca68cd55X1 3.jpg Toshibas Cell Powered REGZA 55X1 LCD TV Can Record and Display 8 Channels At Once [HDTVs]

The TV is on show at CEATEC (Japan’s version of CES), and will go on sale there in December for 1 Million Yen (about $11,115). Toshiba hopes to sell about 1,000 models a month before the 55X1 arrives in the U.S sometime in 2010.

Toshiba also gave some insight into its future plans for CELL processor-based TVs. It talked about using the chip in a range of concepts, including a 3D TV, and a 4K x 2K model that upconverts 1080p to 3840 x 2160. Holy crap. More please. [Toshiba via Impress AV Watch]
