Yahoo Geocities formally shuts down

Posted: 26 Oct 2009 10:39 AM PDT

October 26 is the formal shut down of 15 years in service Yahoo Geocities. The announcement was made last April of the same year but is realized just today. After 26, lots of personal blog and student's project site are no longer available and users/owners can no longer access their files and sites.

For users who definitely love their websites, Yahoo has options and offers you a premium upgrade with their hosting service in just $4.99.

Everybody remembered why Yahoo decided to do this move, "We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways", the company explained.

I remembered my Web and HTML programming subject and my personal sites. Goodbye to you! ~sigh~

Windows 7 Upgrade: a problem to Students

Posted: 26 Oct 2009 10:22 AM PDT

Microsoft offers students an option, instead buying the whole package of windows 7 in a box, they can have it download and upgrade their system in a website in just $ 29. The move was great but several students have reported lots of issues and error encountered upon downloading or with in the process of upgrading.

The most common issue that students encountered is the fact that they cannot easily upgrade a 32-bit version of Vista to 64-bit version of windows 7. At the end, it requires a clean installation thus deleting all previous installed components or simply reformatting and installed the new OS.

These are some of the errors encountered:

Error "We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded."

Error "This version of the file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running."

Error "An error has occurred. Unspecified error."

Description of the above errors are being determined at Social Answers of Microsoft and in addition, there is an established thread for possible work arounds of the said errors and others.
