ATI Unveils World’s First DirectX 11 GPU Posted: 24 Sep 2009 06:05 PM PDT ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices(AMD),officially released the industry's first family of graphics processing units (GPUs) that supports DirectX 11 application programming interface. The new graphics boards – originally code-named Evergreen – not only boast with exclusive features, but also offer incredible performance in today's hi end games.I had posted about the pics of Saphhire 5850 and 5870 in my previous post along with the games which use DirectX 11 support. ATI Radeon HD 5870 is currently the fastest single-chip graphics solutions on the planet. With the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series of graphics cars driven by the most powerful processor on the planet, AMD is changing the game, both in terms of performance and the experience," said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager of products group at AMD. ATI Radeon HD 5870 – the world's most powerful GPU to date that was previously known as ATI RV870 or ATI Cypress – features 1600 stream processing units, 80 texture units, 32 render back ends and 256-bit memory bus. The chip incorporates unprecedented number of transistors – 2.15 billion and has maximum compute performance of 2.72TFLOP/s. Another version of the chip – ATI Radeon HD 5850 – sports 1440 stream processors, 72 texture units, 32 render back ends, 256-bit memory bus and peak performance of 2.09TFLOP/s. Despite of massive computing performance and transistor count, ATI/AMD managed to keep power consumption of its new ATI Radeon HD 5800 graphics cards low enough thanks to 40nm fabrication process and ATI PowerPlay power management technologies. In fact, in idle mode the new graphics cards consume just about 27W, which is almost impossible figure for a high-end desktop graphics adapter today. ATI Radeon HD 5800 not only support DirectX 11 application programming interface, but also feature six integrated TMDS transmitters and can output image to up to three monitors at once thanks to ATI Eyefinity technology, for the first time in the history of consumer-oriented high-performance graphics cards. Besides, thanks to support for DirectCompute 11 and OpenCL, the new high-end graphics chips from AMD can also boast with advanced GPGPU (general purpose computing on graphics processing units) capabilities. "As the first to market with full DirectX 11 support, an unmatched experience made possible with ATI Eyefinity technology, and ATI Stream technology harnessing open standards designed to help make Windows 7 that much better, I can say with confidence that AMD is the undisputed leader in graphics once more," added Mr. Bergman. The ATI Radeon HD 5800-series of graphics cards is supported by a dozen add-in-board companies, including Asustek Computer, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, Force3D, Gigabyte Technology, HIS (Hightech Information Systems), MSI, Multimedia, PowerColor, Sapphire Technology, VisionTek and XFX. Nvidia have to release their Gt300 series in competition for the ATi’s 58XX series ones. The more faster the better for them to catch up.Reviews have already been showing up.Some of them are mentioned below. Here is one of them. The 5870 is the single fastest single-GPU card we have tested, by a wide margin. Looking at its performance in today's games, as a $379 card it makes the GTX 285 at its current prices ($300+) completely irrelevant. The price difference isn't enough to make up for the performance difference, and NVIDIA also has to contend with the 5850, which should perform near the GTX 285 but at a price of $259. As is often the case with a new generation of cards, we're going to see a shakeup here in the market as NVIDIA in particular needs to adjust to these new cards. The catch however is that what we don't have is a level of clear domination when it comes to single-card solutions. AMD was shooting to beat the GTX 295 with the 5870, but in our benchmarks that's not happening. The 295 and the 5870 are close, perhaps close enough that NVIDIA will need to reconsider things, but it's not enough to completely dethrone the GTX 295. NVIDIA still has the faster single-card solution. Meanwhile AMD is retiring the 4870 X2, which ended up beating the 5870 enough that we would consider it a competitor to the 5870. |
Rumor: Steve Jobs moving to Microsoft Posted: 24 Sep 2009 05:22 PM PDT Today i just saw a tweet saying Steve moving to Microsoft from Apple.I was like what the hell is this news.I was totally surprised, could this news be true.Microsoft announced yesterday that Apple CEO and Chairman Steve Jobs would be joining Microsoft as its CEO replacing Steve Ballmer, whose performance in that position has been disappointing to investors. This broadens Microsoft’s raid on Apple employees, which had only been focused on Apple Store managers. Well, this shook me and would shake up the entire technology industry too.Jobs was asked what could lure him away from the company that he co-founded to a company he has had a rocky relationship with for years. “I’d rather not get into that, but let’s just say that if I need another organ, I won’t have to wait too long,” said Jobs. Jobs said he was excited by the opportunity to work at a company that has actual market share in the industry. “At Apple we dominated the smart phone market, and the music player market, but those are nothing compared to the markets that Microsoft dominates in, that kind of market muscle delights me to no end,” said Jobs. Jobs insists it won’t be an issue. “Running Apple bored me. I’m done with them. To think I’d waste my time doing anything for that company when I have such a challenge at Microsoft is ridiculous,” said Jobs. One Apple fan Brian Dawson of Cincinnati, Ohio.quotes “I’ve been told all my life that Microsoft sucks and Steve Jobs is awesome. Now that they’ve joined forces, I don’t know what to do. I feel as if my brain might explode, but I don’t want to get any brain matter on my MacBook Air” I am not sure on how true is this as i couldn’t find any such firm truth. If this is true Microsoft will gain more market share and reach the position as to how Apple is now. What do you feel ? What would happen ? |

Microsoft Silverlight to run on Moblin devices Posted: 24 Sep 2009 04:43 PM PDT I am impressed by Silverlight Microsoft’s rich media plug-in technology for Internet applications as to how its creating a awesome web experience.I wondered when they would come for Windows Mobile as i seemed every chance of that coming true.At the Intel Developer Forum on September 23, Intel demonstrated Microsoft's Silverlight 3 running on an Atom-based Moblin device. That means Silverlight — and not Novell's Moonlight version of it, but Microsoft's own Silverlight — will run on mobile Linux netbooks, phones and more, as of early 2010.Version 3 of Silverlight will be supported, according to Microsoft. Through Silverlight’s cross-platform foundation, developers can write applications once and have them run on both Windows and Moblin devices, Intel said. Moblin is a Linux-based open source operating system project intended for systems ranging from netbooks and handhelds to smartphones and in-car computers. It is primarily focused on the Intel Atom processor.A beta of Moblin Version 2, optimized for nettops/netbooks, went to testers on September 23. Intel's press release today said "operating system support for Microsoft Silverlight will be expanded to include Moblin early next year." Most company watchers assumed that Microsoft would make Silverlight available on Windows Mobile devices first before Windows Mobile 6.5 launches on October 6th.Silverlight 3 shipped in July, featuring offline and 3-D capabilities as well as advanced streaming. Silverlight is a rival to the ubiquitous Adobe Flash platform. Moblin has not supported previous versions of Silverlight. Microsoft, unsurprisingly, is emphasizing that Intel is supporting Silverlight on Atom on both Windows 7 and Moblin. From a September 23blog post on the official Microsoft Silverlight blog:
The Silverlight blog post also made sure to throw in a mention of Moonlight, the port of Silverlight to Linux. But Microsoft officials said that the inclusion of Silverlight in that operating system had no implications for making Silverlight available on mobile phones.Well i will have to wait for a while then. |
