Posted: 23 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT To be honest, I approached the Philips 42PFL7404 today with some trepidation. For while all the models I have seen all the songs and dances of Philips’ 9000 series TV has proved so impressive, I was not completely blown away by the attempt by Philips to step a little lower range in the shape of the 42PFL8404.It is not by any means a bad TV, it does not seem good enough to justify its price compared to some of the cheapest things currently offered by Samsung and Sony. Fortunately, the early signs are good that this reality will not be the case, Philips has resigned from its pricing for the 42PFL7404 really quite spectacular. The 8404 model clocked at the best time of 1.100 pounds, but I found the 42PFL7404 go online for as little as £ 770 - a saving of over £ 300 which puts together much in the ball park of those Sony and Samsung rivals that disturbed me so much when considering the 42PFL8404.Of course, there will be people there for that missing features 42PFL7404 appear serious. Multimedia fiends will probably decry the Ethernet port missing, because it denies you access to both files on a DLNA PC, and online service Philips-complete with full Internet access. Things might not be quite so clear cut when it comes to audio 42PFL7404, though. For another change spec, it uses “speakers” rather than hidden bar visible “was observed along the lower edge of the 42PFL8404. But we reserve our opinion on how much this matters until we have actually heard of all the action. Connections-wise, the 42PFL7404 seems the same as the 42PFL8404, bar missing Ethernet port. This means that you get highlights four HDMIs, a USB port and a VGA - all very respectable for a sub-£ 800 42in TV. A closer examination of these connections shows that the 42PFL7404 replays the same multimedia file formats like too 42PFL8404 (MP3, LPCM, JPEG, MPEG1 / 2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, WMA, MPEG-Stream Program and PAL WMV9 / VC1).
