| DRS Prototype Storing Digital Data Memory System Hardware Posted: 23 Jun 2009 07:09 AM PDT To safeguard the digital information for future generations, the Japanese researchers highlight a prototype system memory that can store enough data for more than a thousand years. This new creation called Digital Rosetta Stone (DRS) was announced at the 2009 Symposium on VLSI circuits, said Techon.
The system was developed by Keio University, Sharp Corp. and the University of Kyoto. The new system is composed of stacked platelets which have been fitted with a mask and ROM are packed with silicon dioxide. The system was created to take the valuable and critical digital data that has been preserved by man. It is said to protect critical data for a thousand years. Apparently, due to magnetic field, the data stored on disk may be lost in 40 years while the data stored on optical disc could be lost in 30-100 years, if affected by oxygen or moisture. Well, semiconductor devices are able to preserve data for a thousand years and above, maintaining the humidity around the chip to 2 percent or less. Keep this in mind, the research said that the data can be stored on the mask ROM with electron-beam direct-writing technology. Thus, stacking of wafers and packaging using SiO2 which finally made a list. By attaching a wafer (reader) for reading the data, it enables communication signals and provide energy wirelessly. Stacking four 15-inch wafers built using 45 nm CMOS technology, it offers 2.5 TBITS capacity memory. The prototype includes research 5mm x 5mm test chips that were developed using 0.18µm CMOS technology. 56mW successfully by providing energy to the list through four channels of wireless transmission at a distance of 0.2 mm between the slate and the reader.
