PSP Go lacks mini USB, compatbility with existing accessories, common sense Posted: 08 Jun 2009 05:11 AM PDT
Confession time: we weren’t exactly charmed by Sony’s PSP Go when Sony made the thing official. It’s not that we’re particularly fond of UMD (quite the contrary as a matter of fact), rather we found it a little hard to stomach a slimmer device that offers nearly the same hardware as its predecessor, swapping an optical drive for more storage, yet will cost nearly twice as much. Factor in the cost of all new accessories and things get even less appealing, with confirmation that the Go lacks a standard mini USB port on top, meaning things like PSP keyboards and Sony’s GPS accessory are on a fast-track to obsolescence. Even current A/V cables and chargers won’t work thanks to a new multifunction port on the base — but Sony will be quite happy to sell you new ones. Is this the price of progress, or an attempt to boost profit margins? It’s not good news for gamers, regardless. JVC’s 32-inch GD-32X1 LCD is 6.4-mm thin, nearly makes OLEDs jealous Posted: 08 Jun 2009 04:42 AM PDT
OLED displays are synonymous with being impossibly thin. But Samsung’s 8.9-mm thick “production-ready” 31-inch OLED TV was just trumped by this 32-inch LCD monitor from JVC measuring just 6.4-mm at its thinnest point. Oh right, thinnest point, we get it, all the processing circuity (Genessa Premium) and jacks (2x HDMI, RGB, component, composite, and more) are bundled into a brick riding the lower-half of the Full HD (1920 |

Super slim laptops are very popular but as it turns out expensive too, unless you are thinking MSI, then you can get the X320 for less around $599. Now that is a lot of computer for such a small price, with only a few dollars more this laptop could be on your desk within days.

Sager NP9280 with Core i7 and triple SSDs is world’s most powerful laptop, anchor Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:59 AM PDT
This one slipped by us but the world’s first Core i7 laptop to ship is probably worth a double-back don’t you think? The Sager NP9280 is almost certainly the same Clevo D900F we spotted at CeBIT back in March. That means a Core i7 snuggled up with Intel’s X58 chipset with triple channel DDR3 memory, 1GB of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics, and a 17.1-inch 1920×1200 display. No telling how long the 12-cell Lithium-Ion battery will last but if it exceeds 30 minutes of usage then we’d be impressed. As a desktop replacement, it’s fully loaded with up to a trio or SATA hard disks, 4x built-in speakers, eSATA, HDMI and DVI video outputs, integrated 3 megapixel webcam, and 4x USB 2.0 jacks plus a single Firewire port all riding an 11.55-pound slab requiring 15.5 x 11.75 x 2.35-inches of elbow room. Unfortunately, there’s no option for running dual GTX 280M GPU in SLI, for that you’ll have to look to Alienware’s Core 2 Extreme–based M17x. The NP9280 starts at about $2,000 though we like ours maxed out with a Core i7 975 Extreme Edition desktop processor, 12GB of DDR3 memory, and 3x 160GB SSDs for more than $7,000. But hey, that’s us and we think robots are scary. Check the hover-craft inspired bottom after the break. Fujitsu F-09A touchscreen phone hits NTT DoCoMo, makes us jealous Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:58 AM PDT
Forgive me if my Pre and iPhone 3GS lusts wane a little, I’ve just seen NTT DoCoMo’s latest super-phone, the Fujitsu F-09A. Packing a 3.4-inch sliding and rotating touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, smile-detection and high-speed FOMA and 3G GSM connectivity. The F-09A is also perhaps the first phone to include an integrated exercise monitor, tracking physical activity and working with the handset’s GPS and compass to track progress and offer mapping. Integrated TV can be watched in widescreen by rotating the display by 90-degrees. There’s also Bluetooth and a full internet browser, media player and the usual NTT DoCoMo treats that Western users can only dream of. No word on how much it will cost when it arrives in Japan on June 10th. [via NaviGadget] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

SGN’s Jet Dogfighter iPhone Game Lands, Turns Out To Be Pretty Fly Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:35 AM PDT
Social Gaming Network (SGN) keeps on pushing out great entertainment applications for the iPhone, and we can’t help continuing to put those in the spotlight. Not only because SGN produces some damn good games that we love to play - check out its suite of Wii-like games for starters - but also because we’d really like to see more developers leverage the network capabilities of the famed Apple device like SGN and other savvy developers are doing. About a month ago, Michael got to test-drive (well, test-fly) SGN’s new jet dogfighter game before its official release in the App Store, and deemed the graphics to be ’stunning’. I’m embedding the demo video he recorded here below, but we should get an updated video of the gameplay from the company soon which we’ll add here as well. Or, as from today, you can also just go to the iTunes App Store and buy the premium version of the game yourself (it’s priced $9.99). The name of the game is F.A.S.T. and the main difference with other jet dogfighter games for the iPhone like Top Gun and Flying Aces is the multi-player aspect and the incredibly good-looking 3D graphics of the whole thing. You can play the game against other people over WiFi (both one-on-one and two-on-two) and the game neatly switches to “God view”, that is an elevated view of the rest of the fight, when you crash or get shot down. You really ought to play it to get a feel of what it’s like to fire missiles and a machine gun from the jet and follow the path of a fired missile as if you were sitting on one, because it’s really hard to explain how much this game rocks without you actually trying it. Let us know your thoughts if you decide to purchase the game. On a sidenote: if you don’t want to see a picture of SGN CEO Shervin Pishevar playing the game wearing an F14 Fighter Helmet, don’t click here. GNB netbook & Kinpo Tablet get Android & low-cost Freescale CPUs Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:35 AM PDT
Sony may be tinkering with Android, but other companies are already slapping it onto hardware and talking about releases. Last week we heard Acer’s plans for a dual-boot Android/XP netbook, together with BenQ’s intentions, and saw a couple of OEM netbooks and MIDs; taking things right back to basics (by which we mean cheap) were Kinpo, with their 7-inch Android-based touchscreen tablet, and GNB, with a sturdy little Android netbook. Video demos of Kinpo Android Tablet and GNB Android Netbook after the cut The GNB netbook has a 7-inch resistive touchscreen display and runs on Freescale’s i.MX31 processor. An ARM-based CPU, the i.MX31 is never going to blow away a Core 2 Duo but it’s enough to run Android reasonably well and cheap enough for a sub-$200 price tag to be talked about. As for the Kinpo tablet, the company are calling it a thin client but it’s basically a touchscreen UMPC with a 7-inch WVGA display and Freescale i.MX51 processor. More work is needed polishing it before it’ll be ready for release - video playback is an obvious issue, as you can see in the video below - but again they’re talking about low prices that might make a lot of sense for those wanting a straightforward web-browsing machine. Olympus E-P1 Is the Micro Four Thirds Camera We’ve Been Waiting For [Camera] Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:29 AM PDT
The Micro Four Thirds lens standard has birthed some decent mini-DSLR-style cameras, but its true, unfulfilled potential lies with compact, Rangerfinder-esque hardware. The E-P1, Olympus’s modern take on its classic Pen SLR, is exactly what we had in mind. All we’ve really got here are a few leaked photos—no specs, no price, no possible date of delivery—but what we can see, we really like. There’s no front photo yet, but all signs point to a modern reimagining of the Pen F, which we outright demanded get the Micro Four Thirds treatment a few months ago. It’s outfitted with a 17mm f2.8 prime lens, and looks to be about the size of a mid-to-large-sized point-and-shoot. Oh, and remember Olympus’s expected June 15th announcement of a retro Micro Four Thirds camera, due for release in July? I’ve got a little tiny hunch that this might have something to do with it. Photography blogs are buzzing with speculation about all facets of this (presumably) upcoming camera, but it’s the concept, not the specific execution, that’s exciting: we know Micro Four Thirds sensors can nearly match their APS-C counterparts in quality, and the the ever-expanding catalog of compatible glass ensures DSLR-like versatility for the emerging standard. Now, the format may well be getting its first body that people might actually want to buy. [1001NoisyCameras, 43Rumors via PocketLint] Read the original post: |
JVC GD-32XI super-slim 1080p display hits Japan in August Posted: 08 Jun 2009 03:21 AM PDT
JVC have announced that their GD-32XI - the world’s slimmest 32-inch LCD display - will go on sale in Japan come August. The screen, announced back at CES in January, measures 6.4mm at its thinnest point, and is capable of displaying 1080p Full HD video. The GD-32XI has a contrast ratio of 4,000:1 and brightness rating of 400cd/m2. It reportedly manages 100-percent coverage of sRGB colors and 90-percent of Adobe RGB, while cutting the number of necessary parts down by around 50-percent. JVC’s GENNESA image processing tech is also onboard, to reduce motion noise, improve color accuracy and boost still images.
Despite the slender dimensions, JVC still manage to fit a fair few ports onto the GD-32XI. As well as two HDMI sockets there are analog RGB ports, component and composite connections, an RS-232 and speaker terminals. There’s also an SD card slot and USB port, for viewing images and listening to MP3s. JVC expect most buyers of the GD-32XI to be business and commercial, planning to shift 10,000 sets a year. The 1080p display will be priced at the equivalent of around $2,500. [via CrunchGear] Relevant Entries on SlashGear
