Ditch that Fabric Softener – They’re Toxic!

Posted: 08 Jun 2009 10:35 AM PDT

Fabric softeners that are used in many homes are seen to be highly toxic. These fabric softeners often contain chemicals such as chloroform, pentance and benzyl acetate which can cause lung, nerve and brain damage. These chemicals too are known to produce cancer.

The worst effect of these chemicals comes into effect when these are subjected to heat. The clothing that was treated by the fabric softener makes way through the skin of the person wearing the clothing. Other people who come in contact with the said person are also affected. The effect may not be noticeable, but over time these carcinogens manifest their effect.

This is now something that I should opt out of my list in my weekly grocery shopping. Unless I am able to find new alternatives to commercial fabric softeners, I must wear newly washed clothes with that stiff and rough feeling to avoid the long term effects of these chemicals.

You can read more details about these fabric softeners and it’s recommended alternative solution in this article: The Toxic Danger of Fabric Softener and Dryer Sheets
