Sharp adds cyan and yellow to its RGB displays, laughs scornfully at magenta Posted: 29 May 2009 07:21 AM PDT Sharp is taking some cues from the nearly dearly departed print publishing world for its next line of LCDs, adding two colors to the typical RGB gamut. Cyan and yellow, half of the CMYK spread that makes your Sunday Garfield sketch pop, are going to be added to the company’s displays to make up what it’s dubbing “Multi-Primary-Color Technology.” The tech is said to be able to reproduce 99 percent of all colors able to be perceived by the human eye — because apparently 1.7 billion colors from a traditional LCD wasn’t enough. The displays will be on display at the Society for Information Display Symposium in San Antonio starting next week. So, lucky Texans, prepare to get your cone cells massaged. Pixel Qi demonstrates 3qi display, merges e-ink with LCD Posted: 29 May 2009 06:57 AM PDT We knew Pixel Qi was up to something when it pledged to give us a cheap laptop that could last 40 hours on a charge. Now we can finally see what, with the OLPC spin-off releasing some images of a prototype screen called 3qi that looks like it can combine the best of e-ink and traditional LCD displays — prototypes that will be shown in the flesh at Computex next week. The screen can work as a traditional backlit LCD when indoors, can have that backlight disabled to be perfectly visible outdoors (shown after the break), and, as its pièce de résistance, can be toggled into an energy-efficient “epaper” mode. How exactly the company is fitting these seemingly disparate slices of technology into a single 10.1-inch screen is something of a mystery, but we’re guessing much will be answered next week ahead of a planned product launch by the end of the year. Color us intrigued. [Via PC World] [via EnGadget.com] |
Study shows CCTVs have almost no effect on crime rate Posted: 29 May 2009 06:53 AM PDT The UK has the world's highest density of CCTVs, which are mainly used as tools to fight crime. But now an "international research network" called The Campbell Collabaration claims the 4.2 million cameras installed in that country almost have no effect. A pattern seems to slowly emerge. In collaboration with the British government, the organization summarized and analyzed a total of 44 different studies related to the topic, which were released in the last years (mostly in the UK) and are said to be scientifically relevant and valid. The report in full can be found here [PDF]. The result: CCTVs only have a slight effect as far as lowering the overall crime rate is concerned. As far as violent crimes go, the cameras even have no effect whatsoever. The report says CCTVs can only be labeled effective when used in car parks (where they lower the crime rate by about 50% in average). The Campbell Collabaration also says that CCTVs installed in the UK are more effective in fighting crime than those used in other countries. For some reason, the organization recommends to keep using the cameras, but with a much narrower focus, i.e. to reduce vehicle crime. See more here: |
CrunchDeals: Roomba 535 for $150 Posted: 29 May 2009 06:43 AM PDT If you're a stickler for clean floors (note: I am not) but you can't afford a live-in maid to clean them every day (note: I can not) and you're not afraid of robots (note: I am, deathly) then perhaps you need a Roomba. Woot.com has the iRobot Roomba 535 for $149.99 with $5 shipping. That, my friends, is an excellent deal as this unit goes for $250 and up just about everywhere else. This is a new unit that Woot's selling, too, not a refurb. The 535 comes with a recharging station so it'll clean the floor and then find its way back to said station when it's all done. It also comes with a "Virtual Wall Lighthouse" which is a little base unit you put on the floor next to a doorway to keep the Roomba in a certain room while blocking off other areas of your house. iRobot Roomba 535 [Woot.com] Excerpt from: |
MSI Wind Box DE200 nettop with ATI graphics Posted: 29 May 2009 06:38 AM PDT Hot on the heels of ASUS' new Eee Box nettops comes rival MSI's new Wind Box DE200. Sporting a new tapered design that reminds me of a Cylon's helmet, the Wind Box DE200 pairs Intel's Atom 230 1.6GHz processor with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 GPU and HDMI output. Other specs include 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 3.5-inch 160GB hard-drive and WiFi b/g/n. The HDMI port shares space with a VGA port, making the DE200 equally happy as a low-power desktop PC as it is an entry-level HTPC. We're not expecting the same graphics performance that you might get from an NVIDIA Ion-based nettop like the Acer AspireRevo, but the Radeon should still offer a pleasant shove over Intel's integrated chipsets. The MSI Wind Box DE200 will run Windows XP Home and be available in four colors - red, blue, white and black - but we don't yet have any idea of pricing or availability. No TiVo DirecTV DVR until 2010, sorry Posted: 29 May 2009 06:35 AM PDT Bad news for DirecTV subs. If you have been waiting, and waiting to upgade your old TiVo Series 2-ish DirecTV DVR, you are going to have to wait a bit longer. It was reveled in the quarterly earnings call that the DVR isn't going to be available this year, rather sometime in 2010. No word was given what caused the delay, but it probably has something to do with the company lossing $4.1 million over the last three months. That same call also featured talk about TiVo's tru2way partnership with Comcast. But that service is still a bit out so don't expect that anytime soon either. Original post: |

Posted: 29 May 2009 06:20 AM PDT The mystery of the Alienware ‘allpowerful’ has been pierced a few days before E3—a brand new m17x stuffed with so much power it might just cause cancer: Dual 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M graphics cards and a Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core CPU for starters. You can also stuff it with up to 8GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, 1TB HDD or 512GB SSD, Blu-ray and all important for gaming, an edge-to-edge 1920×1200 display. It has an Nvidia GeForce 9400M integrated GPU, so you can boost our battery life from 15 seconds to 26.3 seconds when you need to go that extra mile. And ports, ports, ports—the thing is so beastly the USB ports are arranged vertically: 4 USB, eSATA/USB combo, DisplayPort (go Dell) and HDMI. And yes, it’s completely blinged out—lights pour out of it like it just landed on earth after a long trip from a planet populated entirely by a evolved race of disco lights. It’s heavy, too—almost 12 pounds—but despite being thicker than a 18-wheeler it’s easily the best-looking machine Alienware has put out (at least once you turn off the lights). It starts at $1800, but don’t expect to stay that way once you start tricking it out with heavy-duty firepower. [Alienware] |
