AMEX Digital announces Venice-V38HD media player

1c4bd6a70128 09 AMEX Digital announces Venice V38HD media player

AMEX Digital doesn’t seem to have found a gadget that it doesn’t like, and it looks like media players are no exception, as evidenced by the company’s new Venice V38HD device.

Based on Sigma Designs’ SMP8635/4 chipset, this one looks to pack just about everything you’d want short of a full-fledged media PC, including a hefty 2TB of storage, support for all the major video codecs, DVD backup / playback (no Blu-ray, though), HDMI output at 1080p, NAS support and other networking options, and your choice of silver or black color options, to name but a few highlights.

No word on pricing or availability just yet, unfortunately, but you can at least get a closer look at the port situation after the break.

MSI introduces GT729 and EX723 gaming / multimedia laptops

f87b62fe8baptops MSI introduces GT729 and EX723 gaming / multimedia laptops

Every few weeks or so it feels like we’re being formally introduced to yet another MSI laptop, and today we’ve the pleasure of greeting a pair.

Up first is the gaming-centric GT729 (shown left), which rolls in with 3GB of RAM, a Core 2 Duo processor, WiFi, 17-inch LCD, ATI’s 1GB Mobility Radeon HD 4850 GPU, a 4.1 audio system (yes, it has a “subwoofer”), 2 megapixel webcam, optional Bluetooth, HDMI / VGA outputs, three USB 2.0 sockets, a 4-in-1 card reader, audio in / out, an ExpressCard slot, up to 500GB of HDD space, a Blu-ray drive and your choice between a 6- or 9-cell battery (take the latter, just sayin’).

The 17-inch EX723 (shown right) doesn’t differ much, though it does tone things down a bit with a GeForce G110M graphics set and a hard drive maximum of 320GB.

Per usual, MSI’s steering clear of detailing things such as price and release, so hold tight if you’ve found yourself drawn.

Google Wave is a hodgepodge of e-mail, photo sharing, chat

Posted: 28 May 2009 05:00 PM PDT

Ever feel like you have information overload?

You start Gmail to find a few dozen new messages, thousands of spams and a bunch of friends shouting at you via instant message the moment you sign-in.

Then, you hop over to Picasa, Google’s photo-sharing software, to find your family and friends have just uploaded hundreds of snapshots of their trip to Aruba or of your baby cousin.

Finally, you make a pit stop in Google Docs to see that your co-worker has added a few new documents that need your approval.

Could Google Wave, the new product that the company announced today at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, help us cut through the noise?

Probably not. The app just dumps everything onto one page.

The interface should be familiar to Gmail users – just with a lot more stuff. If you’ve checked out the iGoogle custom home page, that should give you a better idea of the hyper-integration that Google is going for.

Wave displays your e-mail in one column and your incoming photos in another. Folders sit on the left side-bar followed by contacts, which you can access to start new communications, called “waves.” And with …

… the help of developers, feeds from Facebook, Twitter and just about any social network could also find themselves plunked down somewhere in Wave’s cluttered interface.

Wave takes Gmail’s concept of threaded e-mail conversations to a whole new level. Every chain of data — be it a photo with comments or a series of messages related to one topic — travels together.

So, if you invite a new participant to the discussion, that person will see all of the related information that came before his or her arrival — and be able to add his or her two cents to any part of the conversation, not just at the bottom of the thread.

One interesting feature is the ability to watch as someone types. We’re not talking about how most chat clients tell you when a friend is typing. You can literally watch in real time as each letter appears on the page and marvel at how slowly your dad types using his trademarked index-finger-poking strategy.

Google is calling Wave “the e-mail of the future.” Considering that we keep reading reports about how young people say e-mail is dead, there’s probably no better time for this than now. But if e-mail is dying, Google had better hope that Wave becomes “the e-communication of the future,” not e-mail.

And sure, these changes certainly constitute a big step for the decades-old idea of e-mail. But will it be interoperable with existing e-mail providers, or are you stuck on the Wave?

Sony W180 and W190 cameras debut in Europe

Posted: 28 May 2009 04:45 PM PDT

Sony introduced two new cameras today and for once they got a European debut before anywhere else. Both are pocket Cyber-shot cameras and bear the monikers W180 and W190. You can easily switch between photo and video modes by just flipping a switch.

These cameras are designed to be very easy to use. Features shared by both cameras include face detection, ISO 3,200 light sensitivity, image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD screen and a 3X optical zoom lens.

The only major difference between the two models has to do with resolution. The W180 has 10.1-megapixels while the W190 has 12.1-megapixels. A subtle difference but sure to make an impact on discerning buyers. You'll be able to get your hands on the Sony W180 and W190 starting in July in Europe at an unknown price.

Android 1.5 update for T-Mobile G1 now rolling out, for real this time

Posted: 28 May 2009 04:31 PM PDT

f2d377cd4fc logo1 Android 1.5 update for T Mobile G1 now rolling out, for real this timeThere have been a whole bunch of false starts on this, but honestly, folks — for real, we’re not messing around — T-Mobile has finally started distributing Android 1.5 over-the-air to American G1 owners.

This means that anyone who hasn’t taken the time to install the update of their own accord is just about to get hooked up without any intervention whatsoever, bringing third-party widget support, a virtual keyboard, email and messaging improvements, a revised UI, and of course, an endless font of delicious pastries that will make you morbidly obese if you eat enough of them over time.

Honestly, while you’re waiting for the update to arrive, hop on the Bowflex for a few minutes. It’s not going to kill you.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Ads For New Microsoft Bing Search Engine…On Google

f92284b00dbingad Ads For New Microsoft Bing Search Engine…On Google

Maybe it works, but seeing ads on Google for Microsoft's new Bing search engine just doesn't seem to send quite the right message. Plus, the ads link to a nearly blank landing page, since Bing hasn't launched yet.

Microsoft is rumored to be spending up to $100 million to advertise the Bing launch. I wonder how much of that Google will end up getting…

There are also ads pointing to a Ning site called BingHub. I can't imagine why whoever created it is spending cold hard cash to promote that, either.

Thanks for the tip, Gur.

Cancer Meds Wiped Off Man’s Fingerprints [Security]

9a7ffc5a37canner Cancer Meds Wiped Off Mans Fingerprints [Security]

A 62-year-old tourist was trying to enter the United States when he was stopped at customs to have his fingerprints scanned. This was a problem for both him and the customs agents, for he had no fingerprints.

The man, dubbed Mr. S in news reports, was detained for hours as agents checked to make sure he wasn’t some sort of sneaky criminal or terrorist. But no, it turns out his fingerprints were removed without his knowledge.

He was taking capecitabine, a follow-up drug for chemotherapy for cancer of the head and neck. One of its side effects is inflammation of the palms and soles of the feet, which can cause peeling and bleeding of the skin and, eventually, can cause fingerprints to vanish.

Mr. S had been taking capecitabine for three years when he decided to visit relatives in the States, at which point his prints were gone. Luckily, he was eventually allowed to enter the country and visit his relatives once the officials determined that he wasn’t dangerous. [ABC News]

Gorgeous brass lamp dimmer, only $500

Posted: 28 May 2009 04:00 PM PDT

File this one under "If I were a rich man." Too subtle to be steampunk, too steampunk to be retro, and too retro to be modern, this simple little brass knob is absolutely beautiful. And what does it do? Well, it's a dimmer for "nearly all incandescent lamp configurations (up to 300W max) and many halogen systems as well." Smooth rheostat lighting for any lamp, very handy though probably not worth five bills in and of itself. Still, for the man who has everything but a dimmer, this is a lovely little piece of hardware.

Oh yes, if I were a rich man… this would be the first thing I'd buy after a Sega Saturn and Twitter.

Virgin Galactic Rocket Blasts Off for the First Time [Space]

Posted: 28 May 2009 04:00 PM PDT

The hybrid Nitrous Oxide rocket that will take SpaceShipTwo to 65 miles above the Earth at 2500mph (YES!) has fired off for the first time in the southern California desert. Founder, adventurer and cool-guy-at-large Sir Richard Branson is happy:

As Virgin Galactic gets ever closer to the start of commercial operations, we are reaching and passing many important and historic milestones. The Virgin MotherShip (VMS) Eve, the first of our amazing, all carbon
composite, high altitude WhiteKnightTwo launch vehicles, is flying superbly. SpaceShipTwo, which will air launch from Eve, is largely constructed and awaiting the start of its own test flight programme later this year.

Rough translation from Brit:

OMFG THAT KICKED ASS! I CAN’T WAIT TO GET INTO THAT THING!

Yes, Sir Richard, I totally share the feeling. Even more because this time there have been no problems at all.

One of the cool things about the rocket is that is controllable and can be shut down safely at any time, allowing SpaceShipTwo to glide down to Earth at any time in case there’s any problem. This is obviously one of the biggest concerns for the company: Safety.

The other big thing—other than putting amateur astronauts up there—is being green. They are trying to make the engine as clean as these things could be. The engine will burn for a very short period of time because it will be first lifted by White Knight II, which uses cleaner fuel. In fact, the carbon footprint for “each of its passengers and crew will be about a quarter of that for a return trip from London to New York.”
