The T-Mobile Sidekick gets an update, the Sidekick LX 2009

T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009

The Sidekick LX from 2007 is getting an update this year, with a bigger and higher resolution screen, better camera, GPS, 3G and a larger capacity battery.

It has a 3.2-inch WVGA 852 x 480 resolution screen (a BIG upgrade from the previous Sidekick LX’s 3-inch 240 x 400 screen), which I can only assume, would definitely look amazing!

The main thing about the Sidekick is the QWERTY keyboard underneath the slide-out screen. The device, now sporting 3G connectivity, is for instant messaging nuts, those all-day texting marathons and of course, the fad nowadays… Twitter! It also has a built-in GPS receiver along with a 3.2 megapixel shooter.

A previous Sidekick phone was called the Sidekick LX. This new one just has a “2009″ affixed at the end. I wonder why they didn’t make up a new name for it. Sidekick LXi would certainly be easier to remember.

Based on the countdown clock on the T-Mobile website, the Sidekick LX 2009 becomes available on May 13, 2009. It is priced at $199.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) with a 2-year contract.

Nokia has already sold 13 million 5800 XpressMusic units?! Not quite…

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Multiple Colors)

Most of the worldwide web was reporting a few days ago that Nokia has already sold 13 million units of the 5800 XpressMusic, which was just released during the last quarter of 2008.

Any mobile phone selling that much within such a short span of time would certainly be considered a feat. But Nokia actually meant to say, 13 million units of the 5310 XpressMusic, which started shipping during the last quarter of 2007.

Nokia’s profit down by 90% (1Q of 2009)

Nokia Logo

Nokia, although not quite popular in the United States as compared to the Philippines, is a major player in the mobile phone industry. In fact, it is largest mobile phone maker in the world.

Net profits went down 90% from $1.573-billion USD to a dismal $160-million USD. As many of you very well know, the world is in a terrible financial crisis right now. When I left the United States, people were getting their homes foreclosed left and right. It’s not just us consumers who are taking a hit, but also major companies as well.

Nokia has reported a decline in sales figures, by almost a third. The company even had to cut 1,700 jobs worldwide as a result. Comparing this years 1st quarter to last year’s; sales were down 27%, from $16.65-billion USD to $12.17-billion USD. 93 million phones were sold during the 1st quarter of 2009.

Although other brands have more advanced features than Nokia phones, many tend to still stick with the brand. This is particularly true, even in the Philippines. If you see the malls around here, you’d be pretty amazed how many mobile phones actually enter the country.
