Rock Xtreme 840SLI-X9100 Full HD Screen 500 GB Gaming Laptop

Posted: 15 Aug 2009 02:01 AM PDT

With laptops games, there is often a fine line between portability and power, but the Rock Xtreme 840SLI-X9100 falls firmly into the latter camp. This monster is definitely a “desktop replacement” in the truest sense, as with a starting weight of six pounds (1.2 kg and another for the power brick), it has the distinct honor of be the largest portable game for honoring our laboratories - not multimedia-based HP Pavilion HDX9095EA.

Rock Xtreme 840SLI-X9100 Full HD Screen 500 GB Gaming Laptop

So what kind of power packed Rock under the hood in question not only the weight, but a chassis that is thicker at its 7cm on your desktop - not to mention a fair price of a pound less than £ 3000? As the title suggests, the feature is as catchy as the range X840 SLI brings serious graphics grunt to the table in the form of two nVidia GeForce 280M GTXs; with 1GB on each card, this laptop has more memory graph some desktops have in total!

Processing power is also impressive. Given its size, we would not have been too surprised to find a CPU Core i7 inside, but Rock stuck to mobile phones and chips past Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 (to get a Core i7, you will make the Rock 790, which does not support SLI). With two cores running at a blistering 3.06GHz, the fastest mobile processor clock of existence, and, according to the game will give you a better performance than the QX9300 Extreme 2.53GHz to four hearts.

Other niceties include a Full HD screen 500 GB and two hard drives 7200 rpm, but before we get too deep into the bowels of the laptop, we’ll have a look on the outside. The unpacking of the beast, first impressions are somewhat mixed. Although undoubtedly chunky, its sleek lines help streamline things a bit. We also like the metal on the hinges, but they are not exactly a perfect match for the silver plastic strips running around the edges of the lid and base.

Sporting a mirror transparent topcoat black support and a retro-Rock logo set in its center, the rock cover is certainly catchy. How long it will remain fairly anyone who thinks that, as is still better than the usual piano black to collect dirt and fingerprints. If it was just a case of being high maintenance could be useful for some, but the finish scratches pretty easily. Then again, this is not exactly a system, you’ll be traveling, as most laptops.

In general, there was no complaint with quality construction, as the chassis feels solid and plastics used do not show signs of bending or cracking. The only exceptions are in a section above the keyboard and the hinge of the cover of metal mesh, which was partially released during transport on our sample, but, fortunately, is quite robust and easy to slot into place.
