Genius G-Pen M609X Tablet

Posted: 28 Aug 2009 03:00 AM PDT

Back in January I reviewed the Genius G-Pen M712 tablet, low cost devices useful for graphic designers and digital photographers. Today, I take a look at another pen tablet Genius G-Pen M609X, sized 9.5 inch model. The market for pen tablet is virtually monopolized almost entirely dominated by bamboo with Wacom, Intuos and Cintiq products. There is no question that the Wacom tablets are exceptionally good, but they are also very expensive, with prices for the new Intuos line 4 from € 200, the other on the same size as the M609X costs around £ 400 . For those of us on budgets tighter range Genius offers a viable alternative at a fraction of the price.

Genius G-Pen M609X Tablet

The M609X is a new range of Genius tablets which have seen a number of improvements over previous models like the M712. The overall appearance is much the same, with a glossy black surround, two large rotary zoom / scroll controls at the top with a row of buttons between the two, and 26 pen-Activated hotkeys around the drawing area. The M609X is a model smaller than the M712, with a widescreen canvas measuring size 13.6 x 22.8 cm, slightly larger, but not as deep as the paper size A5, even if it can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 to press a button. It’s a nice looking gadget, and the build quality and finish is much better than the budget price would suggest.

Like the M712 drawing surface has a texture similar to the matte, and is very pleasant to use the hard-tipped pen. One of the changes for the new model is that the surface of the drawing area is actually a sheet of flexible plastic, which rises in front. It is semi-transparent, so the drawings or photos may be slipped under him for tracing. [via trustedreviews]
