LG BL40 Chocolate Touch gets the hands-on treatment… on video!

We’ve still got our hopes up for an August 23rd launch date, but in the meantime we do have a, well, tasty video of LG’s BL40 Chocolate Touch to tide us over. As you might have guessed, the UI is of the 3D S-Class variety. The accelerometer looks pretty snappy, and watching video seems to be a joy on the 4-inch, 21:9 display. Of course, we could give you a scene-by-scene recap, but we’d hate to spoil this Oscar-worthy production for you. Peep it yourself after the break.

Another MVNO Bites The Dust: Qwest Discontinues Wireless Service

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:52 AM PDT

bf8512448dqwest.jpg Another MVNO Bites The Dust: Qwest Discontinues Wireless ServiceOver and out for the MVNO model?

Qwest has this morning announced that it will be shutting down its Wireless service on Oct. 31, 2009. Formerly in bed with Sprint, Qwest started offering the wireless service in collaboration with Verizon just over a year ago. Under the agreement, Verizon Wireless phones and services were offered to Qwest’s residential and business customers.

Qwest customers who switch to a new service provider prior to Oct 31 will be able to transfer their wireless phone numbers to their new provider of choice, and there is no early termination fee when disconnecting from Qwest Wireless.

More information is available here.

Casio’s Exilim EX-Z450, EX-Z280 and EX-Z90 compacts invoke more Zzzs

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:49 AM PDT

The EX-Z450 above is Casio’s new Exilim Zoom flagship model, but you’ll be forgiven for confusing it for its predecessor the Z400. Their spec sheets are almost identical: both come with 4x optical zoom, 12 megapixel sensor, 720p / 24 fps video, and Exilim Engine 4.0 — hell, even the max ISO setting is identical at 3200, and you can upgrade that ‘for free’ since nobody expects your highest settings to be usable anyway. What’s new? An autofocus for the ages, apparently, as the sole difference is a new Intelligent AF feature that automatically adjusts focus and exposure for photographic subjects, human or otherwise. The Z90 shrinks those innards into a more portable package, but drops to 3x zoom in the process. The two cameras are expected in early October for $199 and $149, respectively. They’ll be joined by the unpriced Z280 shooter that misses out on the auto-detect magic, but gains a wide-angle 26mm lens. Full frontal shots of each camera after the break.

Samsung whips out trio of new Bluetooth accessories

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:31 AM PDT

samsungweb870I am not a big fan of the Bluetards who wear their Bluetooth headsets everywhere. Bluetooth headsets are great in the car, but when you are just walking around use the phone. We haven’t been impressed that you own a Bluetooth device for many years.

If you are in need of a new Bluetooth hands free device to use on your commute Samsung has unveiled three new Bluetooth accessories including the WEP870, the WEP850, and the WEP470. The WEP870 is a high-end Bluetooth noise-cancelling headset that can pair with two devices at the same time. The headset can be used to send and receive calls and is a wireless music-streaming headset too. A removable stereo earbud lanyard is included with the device selling for $89.99.

The WEP850 is a mono-style headset with a minimalist design that has an advanced dual-mic design with noise and echo cancellation. These two features promise to reduce background noise to make calls with higher quality. The device sells for $69.99. Samsung has also unveiled the WEP470, designed to be a small and easy to use Bluetooth device. The 470 still offers noise and echo filtration and it has an LED battery indicator at a low price of $39.99.

World’s Largest Aircraft Breaks World’s Airlifting Record [Airplanes]

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:30 AM PDT

This is the Antonov An-225, the world’s largest operational aircraft, going to beat the world’s airlifting record. After a complete overhaul, it just carried a colossal 190-ton, 53-foot long generator from Frankfurt to Armenia.

The Antonov An-225—call the Mriya, Dream—was built to freight the Buran, Soviet Union’s failed response to the American space shuttle. It’s 276-foot long, with a 290-foot wingspan, and a door measuring 14.4 x 21 feet. I was inside the Antonov AN-124 and I was blown away by its gargantuan proportions. I can’t imagine how huge this one really is, up close and personal. [Flight Global]

iropod would be a cool all-in-one PC desk

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:18 AM PDT

If you are the type who jumped all over the all-in-one PC the first time they came down in price the perfect quasi computer desk for you has just tipped up and it’s called the iropod. Unfortunately, it’s apparently not available as a desk only. The weird device is an articulating arm on wheels that has a little tray for a keyboard.

The idea is that you can attach the monitor to the iropod and then wheel it around your house. The neck of the device is so long you can burn your retinas out by getting it very close to your face while sitting down, or even laying down. I can hear mom now yelling that you will go blind sitting that close to the screen.

Tucked away inside the odd desk-like thing is a battery to provide power without needing to be plugged in. The device has a PC built into the chassis, which odds are runs an Intel Atom or other low-power rig. I’d like it better if it was a desk for an all-in-one. There are no hard specs offered on the device.

Sony PS3 Slim shows up for pre-order at Kmart, $300

52eb971a17er bom.jpg Sony PS3 Slim shows up for pre order at Kmart, $300

Our suspicions about that earlier Kmart ad were spot-on. The link is now hot with specs showing a PS3 Slim priced at $300 which includes Blu-ray, a 120GB hard disk, DualShock3 controller, and HDMI output with 1080p support. It’s listed with an August 24 release date which seems a bit eager to us. The Kmart site is updating which means that some of these details could change (like the price and date) but this seems like a definite for announcement later today at Gamescon.

Update: Sears has the same offer and date.

HTC’s Leo-bound TouchFlo 3D 2.6 lovingly demonstrated

HTC's Leo-bound TouchFlo 3D version 2.6 lovingly demonstrated
No, that’s not a Hero up there. That’s an image of the latest version of HTC’s TouchFlo 3D, destined for inclusion on the company’s next Windows Mobile smartphone — likely the fabled Leo we’ve been hearing about oh so much over the past few days. pocketnow.com has posted a walkthrough of the the UI, which looks lovely and clean and is a solid step up over previous revisions. It even runs quite well on this Touch Diamond2 it’s been installed to, meaning performance should be incredibly snappy on the Leo if its hardware is as solid as is rumored. There’s still no confirmation from HTC about any new hardware, but until that comes (it shouldn’t be long, now) you can enjoy the enthusiastic video after the break.

Kmart and Sears have a product page for the PS3 Slim – ZOMG!

Posted: 18 Aug 2009 06:11 AM PDT

ps3-slim

Oh boy, kiddies. The PS3 Slim rumor just got a whole lot more credible. Kmart and Sears both have a product page live for the PS3 Slim. The Sears page even states the following

PS3, SLIM High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience. Free PLAYSTATION Network membership. 120GB HDD for downloading games, music, videos, and photos. Includes DUAL SHOCK 3 controller. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.

Now, the page doesn’t show any pics but it does show a $299 price and a release date of 8/24/2009. That’s next Monday! It’s probably best to keep one of the product pages up in a tab and hit the refresh button every few minutes just in case more info appears. That’s what I’m going to do. Peter Ha however has retreated into a corner and is rocking back and forth while we wait for more info. It’s sad.
