Microsoft reveals Windows Family Pack and Windows Anytime Upgrade pricing

Posted: 02 Aug 2009 04:30 PM PDT

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (Family Pack for 3 users)

Microsoft has revealed pricing for additional variants on Windows 7, particularly a Home Premium Family Pack which allows you to upgrade 3 personal computers to Windows 7 Home Premium. The Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack is priced at $149.99.

Microsoft Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade (Packaging)

As for those who might want to migrate from one version of Windows 7 to another, Microsoft also has a plan for that and they call it the Anytime Upgrade.

You can upgrade from Starter (the version which will be pre-installed in most netbooks once Windows 7 is out) to Home Premium for $79.99, or upgrade from Home Premium to Professional for $89.99 and lastly, upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate for $139.99.

A customer may purchase a netbook thinking they would use primarily it for email. Over time, they find they are using that netbook as their primary every-day PC. That person decides they want their netbook to do more. If the netbook is running Windows 7 Starter (or Windows 7 Home Basic in select markets), WAU makes it super easy to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. Moving to Windows 7 Home Premium will allow that customer to take advantage of features such as Aero Peek and other enhanced functionality in the Windows Taskbar in Windows 7 such as Taskbar Previews. Desktop themes are also enabled and so is Remote Media Streaming.

Another case where WAU may come in handy is when a person wants the ability to connect to a business network (a "domain"). Using WAU to move up to Windows 7 Professional enables the customer to take advantage of the ability to join a domain and use Windows XP Mode to run older programs. When using WAU to move to Windows 7 Ultimate, you'll get everything from the other editions plus BitLocker to keep your USB devices encrypted and secure and the ability to run your PC in any of 35 different languages (via Language Packs).

Nokia 5800i XpressMusic shows up with improved camera but without WiFi?

Nokia 5800i XpressMusic (Front and Back)

The FCC was recently graced by the presence of a device dubbed as the Nokia 5800i XpressMusic. The only improved aspect of which, appears to be the camera now indicates a focus distance of 4.6mm instead of the previous 3.7mm.

WiFi is also believed to have been left out of the device. Nowadays, WiFi is basically a feature necessity when a person is shopping for a phone. It definitely beats me as to why Nokia would even think of removing such a feature from a touchscreen device.

Shown above are shots of the side, top and bottom parts of the device. Everything is indeed aesthetically the same as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. I guess we’ll have to wait it out until official announcements have been made before we assume the worst.

Windows Phone Mobile OS (Windows Mobile 6.5) walkthrough using HTC Touch Diamond2

HTC Touch Diamond2 Running Latest Windows Phone/Windows Mobile OS

The Inquirer has an exclusive first look on the Windows Phone OS (previously know as Windows Mobile 6.5/WM6.5) running on a HTC Touch Diamond2.

Click here to view the video. I decided not to embed the movie on this post because it wasn’t loading up correctly. It takes quite some time to load, and runs just a bit over 10 minutes.

Apparently, the underlying software still looks more or less the same as previous versions of Windows Mobile. The only major overhaul that appears to have been done was to make menu navigation more finger-friendly. Quite frankly, it looks pretty sluggish.

The only thing that probably holds up for newer Windows Mobile-based phones is the WVGA resolution (800 x 480) which is tremendously bigger compared to the measly 320 x 480 resolution of found on the the Apple iPhone.

No multi-touch gestures have been showcased, those are believed to make their way into Windows Mobile when version 7 comes out, probably sometime next year.

Members of the invitation-only Windows 7 Technical Beta Program are eligible to get a free, final copy of Windows 7 Ultimate

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (Packaging)

It appears that Windows 7 beta testers might be able to get their hands on complimentary Windows 7 Ultimate edition software (which is worth $219.99 $319.99).

I’m not quite sure whether each beta tester will be getting a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate edition or if there are certain requirements that you have to meet.

For more information on how to take advantage of this, refer to Paul's post in the .Beta_Program newsgroup for details.

Tell Paul that Brandon sent you – and be sure to thank him!

Sony PlayStation 3 manufacturing costs down by 70%? Price drop iminent?

Posted: 02 Aug 2009 11:30 AM PDT

Sony PlayStation 3 (Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle) Limited Edition

Reports have been circulating that the cost of producing/manufacturing a Sony PlayStation 3 has gone down by as much as 70%, which brings the cost of production to $240.

The original manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 3 is believed to be around $800. While this may look nice to the general public, giving thoughts of a possible price drop in the near future, I don’t think Sony’s gonna please everyone just yet.

Remember that they’ve been selling the consoles at a loss for a while now. It may also take them a while to get them back on their feet, profit-wise. Hopefully, everyone’s gonna get that $100 price drop soon.

AT&T Warhawk (HTC Touch Diamond2) Leaked Data Sheet

AT&T’s HTC Warhawk (otherwise known as the HTC Touch Diamond2) passed FCC approval. Everything is basically the same as the unbranded version, except that this one has AT&T-specific firmware.

While the FCC has already approved the device for AT&T, it may still be a while before this device makes its way into AT&T stores. Pricing has also not yet been announced.
