Is network subnetting driving you crazy ? Does binary math gives you headaches ? well..fear not, since the time i have delved into networks, i have gone through all the oohs and aaahs and the NAH's of the logical crescendo , and I present you the easiest way to do subnetting. Generally,3 questions are being addressed when subnetting an IP-

No of subnets
No of valid hosts and
Host range/block size

We will tackle them one by one. First you need to know about IP addresses and their classes.

Class A includes 0-127 where 0 and 127 are reserved, the default subnet mask for this class is /8 .

Class B includes 128-191 in their first octet, and the default subnet mask for this class is /16

Class C deals with 192-224 in their first octet and the default subnet mask for this class is /24

Also, also, understand a simple concept, subnet masks lying between 8- 15 are A class masks, from 16- 23 are B class and 24-32 are C class masks. Furthermore, a subnet mask can be expressed as this where (N)etwork value and (H)ost values-

Class A : 255.0.0.0 = NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH
Class B : 255.255.0.0 = NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH
Class C : 255.255.0.0 = NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH
Class mask value 8 16 24 32

Now once you see it, lets tackle some real life questions. Lets find the no of subnets and valid hosts for 192.168.10.10/18

See this ? its a C class IP address having a mask of B class (as the mask lies between 16-24) now, in order to find the number of subnets, use the following formulae -

2 ^ (What mask you have been provided – default mask of the IP address given)

putting the values here..

2^(18-16) –> 2^(2) –> 4 subnets

simple : )

Now for calculating the no.of hosts, use the below formulae -

2^(32- what mask you have been provided) –2

Putting values here..

2^(32-18)-2 -> 2^(14)-2 –> 16384-2 –> 16382 hosts

piece of cake ..

now to find the block size, see the provided mask lies between which next default mask value , which in this case is 24 (as 18 is greater than 16 and less than 24) . So ..

Subtract the provided mask with the class mask value which is greater than it.

2^(Next class mask value – provided mask)

which on putting values will be

2^(24-18) –> 2^6 –> 64

So, the block size will be of 64 . So, the IP addresses will be divided into 4 subnets (which we already calculated above) above as -

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.63.255

192.168.64.0 – 192.168.127.255

192.168.128.0 - 192.168.191.255

192.168.192.0 – 192.168.255.255

And the best part, its applicable to all classes : )

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has been involved in incredible environmental outreach services since 1972. Though they do an amazing job on their own of educating curious world citizens through their extensive and detailed website and programs, various celebrities have volunteered to stand alongside them to support their cause.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and Academy Award nominee, Don Cheadle have both been appointed as ambassadors for UNEP, exuding great effort to help bring awareness and support to the important work UNEP is doing.

Loyal Studios in Santa Monica was proud to lend its studio to Bundchen and Cheadle, having had previously worked with Cheadle on a commercial in January, 2011–co-produced by Loyal Studios owner, Bob Bekian.

Their relationship continued when Cheadle formally asked Bekian to co-produce a spot for UNEP. Bekian happily donated his Santa Monica facility and production services, equipment, and crew for the project in support of Cheadle and Bundchen, and their cause.

"The added bonus was working with Gisele." Bekian states. "She is super cool, very down-to-earth, and genuinely a nice person." The shoot ran flawlessly, and everyone enjoyed the experience of working with such incredibly talented and kind artists. "Our goal is to make professional production fun," Bekian says, "and we want to do our part to help our world become a better place."

The UNEP's mission statement is, "To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations."

Gisele, Don Cheadle, and Loyal Studios are focused on putting the word out on the importance of caring about what we use our Earth for, while working in conjunction with our natural ecosystems to create a sustainable green economy.

Paanch Rupaiya Baarah Aana, the production house, has launched the teaser of Saahil Prem's new movie 'Someday'.

Someday is not any average Bollywood movie. It is international in all senses. Termed as India's first International dance movie, it has been shot in the university town of Sheffield in England and features Salah Benlemqawanssa, a French award-winning competitive hip-hop dancer , who will act in a Bollywood movie for the first time.

Saahil Prem in his directorial debut has experimented with a new genre of movie, bringing the dance form B-Boying in the lime light. The dance form is fresh and vibrant, and is something the Indian audience is not used to seeing on a daily basis. The dance form is there not just to attract the audience but also forms an essential part of the story especially in terms of the tonality and the attitude of the movie. In the movie, the director aims to convey the message of 'giving people the courage to follow their dreams no matter the odds' through dance.

Someday is a movie of three Asian boys, who leave their home and country and go to study abroad, their struggles, their heartbreaks, their trials and triumphs. Life changing experiences coupled with new responsibilities help push our 'boys' into the journey of manhood.

The iconic 'figure-of-eight' design of the orchestral violin has evolved little over the last 500 years so step up Hopfgartner Gerda to design a new form for the instrument based on the designs of ships and yachts of the 1950s as well as Baroque underwear! It's called the "Gavari" Semi-acoustic violin and is product of a collaboration between designer Gerda and and a professional Viennese violin maker to guarantee the sound quality. Orange unveils the Solar concept — the eco-friendly tent

You might not think that tents are particularly damaging to the environment but Orange has found a way of reducing even the fabric flophouse's minuscule carbon footprint. They've done this not by reducing the energy usage of the tent itself but by focusing on the recharging of all those little gadgets that you're bound to have taken camping with you. Orange, alongside US product design consultancy Kaleidoscope, has used "Cutting edge eco-energy technology" has created a tent that allows campers to power their gadgets from a WiFi-enabled control panel incorporating a magnetic induction driven charging point. The charging point is in turn powered by photovoltaic fabric mounted on three 'glides' that slide over the top of the tent throughout the day so they're always pointing towards the sun. Kaleidoscope strategist, McKenty Aim said: The development of photovoltaic fabric will revolutionise festival tent design, in working with Orange we have created a vision of camping that we believe is glimpse to a great future. The tent also comes with a few other features: The 'glo-cation' feature makes the tent glow when the camper gets close to it (using RFID or an SMS message) so you can find it in the dark! You won't get cold at night either since the ground sheet incorporates under-floor heating. Orange's Solar tent is just a concept at the moment but will be on display at this year's Glastonbury festival.

Which side of the Brain do you rely on?

We have all studied about the brain and its various functions in the lower and high classes during our school days. But still let me refresh the memory of those who have completely lost touch with the study of the human body after school. Various functions of our body are controlled by the left and the right sides of our brain respectively.

Although they are completely identical in structure they functions differ overtly and significantly. So let's dig deeper into the functions of the human brain. Your organization in work, your determination to finish the task at hand, your logical thinking, your ability to solve a problem and your reliance on reality are all the functions of the left side of your brain. The ones who rely more on this side are good at all the above mentioned tasks. The left brain teachers usually like to go ahead with the debate and discussion type of teaching.

Similarly the left brain students perform well individually rather than in a group. Such people are mostly seen to be dog lovers. They are advised to be more organized with their notes and argue less with their teachers. Owing to their skill they must choose factual projects for a better outcome. Coming to those who rely more on the right side. Research has completely opposite characteristics to attribute to them. They are comparatively less organized and more impulsive. Their emotional string can be triggered easily. On a positive note, they are very creative whether its painting, drawing, writing or music. When I say music they are more into rock music and can study in a noisy environment too. They are found to be cat lovers in contrast to those who rely on the left side of the brain.

Talking about the teachers relying on this side, they prefer to use practical work as a method of learning rather than mugging up the theory. Coming to the students interaction and activity. They are open to new ways and creativity. So now it is easy for you to categorize yourself into one of these groups depending on the nature of your personality.

The tablet is connected to the internet as soon as it is turned on and common applications like web browsing, e-mail and social networks are immediately usable. A lap top computer would take several seconds to boot up. The battery on a tablet lasts all day, compared to a laptop or even a mobile phone which needs recharging if used for more than a few hours. The product is light and sleek and usable virtually any place, any time.

Above and beyond all these is the access to thousands of programs and apps for tablets. There are literally millions of games, music, videos, books, TV shows and other material that is instantly accessible and at low costs. In addition, the tablet serves as an audio and video phone, a still and video camera, a sound and voice recorder and an ever increasing set of functions as new apps get written for use with tablets.

Smart phones are building in many of the features now found on tablet computers and perhaps, over time, there would be total convergence between these devices. As of now, the larger screen size of tablets is the main differentiation.

Tablets in education

From the second half of 2010, the success of the iPad and other tablets with young people became clear. Not just teenagers, but also pre-teen children started carrying and using tablets. The high cost of the tablets meant that these were first visible in the upscale neighborhoods.

Educationists and school administrators started to see the potential of the tablet computer as an educational tool. The initial efforts were to rewrite course material designed for desktop and laptop computers to be made tablet compatible. The early experience with such teaching material has now led to scores of new apps being written specifically for tablet based education. The number of schools and colleges adopting tablets as a teaching tool is beginning to grow rapidly, especially in the advanced economies of the world.

The tablet computers have the advantage of being used concurrently with class room teaching. The past computer based lessons tended to be in exclusive computer rooms. While teaching using a conventional blackboard, the teacher can access additional content on the students’ tablets to illustrate a concept with images, a video clip or even a lab experiment. The students in class can record the teacher’s voice or take notes direct on the tablet screen. The tablet based lessons can have additional hyper links to permit the student to explore a subject deeper than the time available in a class room and strengthen contextual learning and inquiry rather than learning by rote.

Most class room teaching is a compromise between goings too fast for the slow learners in class while retaining interest for the faster children. The tablet based content can permit these brighter children to learn to explore a subject on their own, while the teaching speed remains geared to the average child.

The tablet based teaching content is also a great tool to overcome issues with poor teaching ability or poor motivation in teaching staff.

The challenge of creating content

The success of tablet based teaching depends a great deal on continually creating and upgrading content. These are needed to retain interest in the students and to persuade them to keep revisiting the teaching material over their academic year. Most educational content is now being created by interested free lancers and there is, as yet, insignificant commercial reward for such content creation.

There are some efforts to get some of the major educational publishing houses like McGraw Hill and Prentice Hall to contribute their expertise towards the creation and constant updating of content.

Affordability issues

The tablet computer is an expensive device priced at around $450. Technology forecasters do not see any dramatic fall in this pricing. Their betting is that tablet makers will just add more features, keeping the pricing at around this level. This makes the tablet difficult to afford for children from the poorer families. The inner city schools also do not have the money to fund buying of tablets for their students. The wider usage of tablets in upscale schools and non-use in poorer schools would create further disparity in the quality of education a child receives. These issues become even more pronounced in the developing economies.

The coming few years would surely see the tablet computer play an increasingly important role as an educational tool and would certainly help make the learning process greater fun for the children.

This week, the Wall Street Journal pegged it: Global companies took years building supply chains. In 2011, natural disasters took just days to break them all apart. The story about the 3 Idiots in India has impressed the Chinese too! They just cant get enough of Rancho and his friends. The film has worked very well with them. This adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel [Five Point Someone] which came bore Indian audience in 2009 was released in China just two weeks ago has done good business over there.

3 Idiots Create History in the Overseas Market

The Aamir Khan – Sharman starrer has won the hearts of the Chinese audience, who cannot get enough of the Phunsuk Wangdu and the Ranchodas Chanchad characters played by Aamir. 3 Idiots, which released in India in 2009, was released in China just two weeks back with only 900 prints.

You have no choice but to believe me when I say that it has managed to earn a huge sum of 11 Crores in just 14 days. It is matter of pride for its makers because only few foreign films are allowed in China and 3 Idiots got to be one of them. Doing well apart from this definitely adds to the pride. China being the second market for Indian films after the US is very happy to receive entertainment of this kind.

A delighted CEO, Sameer Rao, talking on behalf of Vinod Chopra Films, said "Mainland China is the second biggest film market after the US but it is very difficult to enter because only twenty foreign films can be screened in China in a year. After its success in just two weeks, the VCF camp has built high hopes that the movie will have a very long run in the Chinese market. Anil Arjun, the CEO of Reliance Media Works, said, "The message in the film has been the pull factor in the film. Such a great response from a non-traditional territory like China is a welcome phenomenon for the Hindi film Market".

This extra ordinary success in the Chinese Market has made 3 Idiots the highest grossing movie in the overseas market with a total of Rs 121 Crore. The success of 3 Idiots has opened doors to other Indian movies in the Chinese market. Audrey Lee, the owner of the Chinese Distributor Firm Ekdo Films, said "Films from various countries are given a chance to be released in China under the quota system. As 3 Idiots is doing very well, Indian Films now have a better chance to be released in China. The local distributors too shall try hard as they have seen the response an Indian film can get".

This success is to be celebrated by the entire Hindi film industry since it has opened doors for Indian films abroad. So I come to the end of this article by congratulating the makers. Congratulations guys!!!!!

A new critical flaw in Wi-Fi Protected Standard (WPS) has recently been uncovered by Security researcher Stefan Viehböck that leaves wireless routers open to attack. The inherent vulnerability lies in the design protocol that splits the 8 digit PIN in two halves which reduces its complexity and henceforth the time required to crack it. Simple permutations and combinations deduce that an 8 digit pin will create 100 million possible combinations and during his testing Stefan found it takes 2 seconds to test each combination, so bruteforcing was not a feasible option.

Unfortunately, after entering the first 4 digits of a pin, the protocol used by WPS confirms if they are correct or not, which means the pairs can be attacked separately. Also, the remaining 4 digits is just a checksum, so if an attacker has the first 4 digits, he just have to try ~1000 combinations to crack it open , which brings it to a total of 11000 different combinations to the correct pin which reduces the attack time into a matter of hours. I guess router manufacturers are up for a software fix, till then , I guess we all have to go back to MAC address .

Okay folks :) Its that time of the year again when you can get high (me on red bull) and celebrate like there is no tomorrow (literally..2012 anyone ? ). Happy New Year everyone..I have taken a lot of resolutions for 2012, and I will make them true .. that's one more resolution for me.

As a roundup of 2011, I got hired at Tulip Telecom and now oversee the good, the bad and the nerdy side of security there along with network operations,ranted about the current security scene,wrote about Top Indian Hackers, I got my HTC wildfire (rooted and still kicking ass), got myself a new laptop , got interested into networking, hacked routers and did a lot of research on exotic fields if you have been following the Prohack FB page lately. I am sorry for absence of posts though, which can be attributed to me getting busy on a lot of side projects and on my Job. One of resolutions for 2012 includes giving more time to Prohack and I will see it through .

When December comes its not just the Christmas, Santa and a new year resolution that one thinks of or should be thinking of. One also ought to know or recollect if I may say so how good or how bad the year was which is on the verge of its end. It is a lesson for us each time to remember not only the happy moments but also the tragic or the sad ones in order to be able to avoid repeating them over and over again.

A Recap of 2011

So lets quickly take a look or go to the flashback of the year 2011 : Year in 60 seconds: 2011.

As mentioned earlier the world has had its share of both good and bad events this year. This made an expert or an analyst like Thomson Reuters' give his review over this eventful year. So lets take a look.

The year made many sad and unhappy by causing them a loss of their loved ones in many unspeakable ways raging from natural calamities to attacks by anti social elements existing in the society. There was a massive loss of population and property due to the earthquake that stuck New Zealand. This not only took lives but also crippled many for a life time. Now let me mention something to cheer you up. Durable goods in America are likely to contribute to its recovery from recession. Now that's a wow! To add to our joy Toyota company is expecting to create records by the time new year begins. But again to our dismay 2011 is the same unfortunate year that witnessed a life taking spread of fire in San Francisco. The war in Iran is also worth a mention here. Romney quoted the Iraq pullout a signature failure of Obama. What a disappointing year for the president.

There's more friends it is the same year in which Japan witnessed regional uncertainty to curb which she took up the F35. An unexpected trouble huh….. Columbia also did not stay back in tragedies as it saw a bullfight that injured six people. The most recent tragedy being the death of Steve Jobs the CEO of the famous Apple company. Okay now enough of sad news. The goods things that happened this year include the royal wedding of William and Kate which was much talked about. With this I conclude by wishing for a better year ahead. Happy New Year in advance folks.

We simply ran out of time to answer all the questions live, so have captured common themes and answered them here. This is the first of a two-part series. Q: How do you best manage the proliferation of S&OP meetings? People inherently object to having meetings for meetings sake! It is important to differentiate between meeting and working sessions. Executive S&OP meetings are intended to be very efficient and structured, given the CXO level participants. These meetings should have a very specific agenda with clearly defined goals for the meeting. Working sessions are more of a combination of structured agenda as well as unstructured time to discuss collaboratively on various topics. Demand review and supply review meetings are examples of these working sessions. From a technology perspective, the solution should provide the ability to document business context, assumptions, action items and opportunities for further follow-up and tracking. Q: How do you handle "what if" analysis & scenario analysis within Steelwedge? Steelwedge provides a platform that balances supply, demand and finance and enables the end-to-end S&OP process. Scenario management and what-if analysis can be implemented at any stage of this process: demand forecasting, supply planning or executive S&OP. With the downturn in the economy and jobs being scarce these days, many undergraduate students are choosing to continue their education. Enrollment in graduate schools is at all-time highs, with many people choosing to pursue Masters and Doctorate degrees. However, there are some serious questions about whether this is really a smart strategy to ensure employment post-graduation.

Alternatives to education in an economic crises

Innovation During Hard Times

If you look historically at when innovations in technology and successful companies have been established, it is amazing to see how many happen during times of economic distress. Apple was started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1975, during a major economic downturn. Neither Jobs or Wozniak had graduate-level degrees and they developed a technological innovation that has become a leading company around the world. During the midst of the dot-com bubble burst of 2001, Apple engineers were working on innovative products that later were introduced as the iPod, leading the way to later products such as the iPhone and the iPad.

In 1980, Ted Turner introduced CNN. During this period of time, the United States was in the midst of a double-dip recession and interest rates and inflation were extremely high. CNN was the first 24-hour news network and in 1982, Turner introduced Headline News.

Other top companies that have been introduced during economic recessions include General Electric (1890), General Motors (1908), IBM (1896), Disney (1923) and Microsoft (1975). Interestingly enough, none of the founders of these companies had advanced degrees.

Seeking Alternatives for Income

One of the amazing phenomenons of the current economic downturn is the alternative options that many people are finding for creating income and employment. With the availability of the internet and computers, many people have discovered new ways to support themselves without having a traditional job. For example, the introduction of smart phones has changed the entire technological landscape and individuals are writing small apps that have turned into lucrative sources of income.

Other individuals are discovering the secrets of internet marketing. Opening an e-commerce site or selling items through eBay, Itsy or other sites have created income for many people. Often, it is possible to work with drop ship companies and remove the necessity of maintaining inventory or being responsible for shipping products.

Success Without Advanced Education

Certainly, there is value in getting education. It can open you up to new ways of thinking and an entirely new subjects of interest. However, having an education is not a guarantee to success in business or life in general. Frequently, individuals who start new companies or create innovative new products have the drive for success regardless of their educational background. Skills such as leadership, creative problem-solving and determination allow them to find niches for their products and services.

With so many people currently enrolled in graduate school programs, the issue of lack of employment has simply been delayed. Instead, it might be wiser to explore alternative options for generating income that can be sustained and turned into a successful and lucrative career. Taking the lessons of past economic downturns, the old adage is certainly true, "necessity is the mother of invention." If you take this old saying to heart, you too can find an inventive and creative source of income and success.

Student who pursue any sport as an extracurricular activity become a method of cashing the sport for the institutions they study in. a student athlete as he is called gets a status above a regular student for his extraordinary performance. He is given all the facilities that normally no one gets. Some unusual favors are downed upon him which otherwise he wouldn't even think of getting. He gets a scholarship, accommodation, food and tuition’s all for free.

Student Athlete - A Source of Profit to Universities

This is beneficial both for the institution and for the student athlete. Where the athlete gets the above mentioned benefits the institution en cashes his performance during inter school sports competitions and other such events.

It has been observed that the institution or the private companies seem to benefit more than the student athlete. There have been instances of the coaches being paid more than a full time professor as they prove to be a source of high monitory gains for the institution than the others. There have been cases of the coaches going on strike in Universities like Pittsburg demanding a hike in their salaries. It will not be irrelevant here to mention that Andy Oliver was the first athlete ever to win against the NCAA in court which raised objection on NCAA's football contracts with the television. Now let us go back to history that traces the origin of this term student athlete. This term was first used in the 1950s post the death of Ray Dannison from a football related head injury. When his widow filed for a workman's compensation she was denied saying he was not working for the university during his tenure and therefore it doesn't cover workman's compensation.

Now the question arises whether they should be paid at all. There has been a huge argument about this which has not reached a conclusion yet! Some feel that the monitory form of reward will effect their performance and they will no longer have a passion for the game and will become money minded. There is yet another group which believes the payment is important owing to the great benefit they are giving to the universities and institutions. The group against this idea points out that the university already goes out of the in providing books, scholarships food and residence so they should not be asking for more. In this way the argument seems never ending! Not all sports bring profits to schools and colleges. Games need to be chosen on the basis of their popularity. They should be the ones that people would like to watch on the television and enjoy. In that sense football and basketball have been the sports adding to the profit of schools and colleges. Amongst these there are some specific football teams chosen over the others owing to their popularity.

So in this way a student athlete has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and the money involved is what makes people in countries like the United States of America take more interest in sports in comparison to the other countries. So let's hope to see more of fair play and less of exploitation of student athletes in the years to come!

Some feel that it's nice and light while others feel it is nothing different from an ordinary song. Right from superstar Amitabh Bachchan to popular lyricist Javed Akhtar have given their valuable opinions about this much talked about song. In the last twenty years, the way we live our lives has changed dramatically. The Internet has altered the way we shop, communicate and socialize, and with smartphones such as the legendary iPhone, digital technology now lets us access Facebook, email and the rest of the Internet no matter where we are.

Digital technology has changed other aspects of our lives too. Flat screen TVs and TiVo boxes have replaced the bulky VCR and CRT TV, while netbooks and tablet computers such as the iPad have shrunk and stylized our PCs making our homes and offices look modern and more fitting for the twenty-first century. But the digital revolution has modernized other areas too, altering the very aesthetics of main streets, shopping malls and even the highway.

No matter where you live, whether in New York, LA or in small town America, you must have noticed how out of home advertising has changed. Those posters and billboards that sell us everything from hamburgers and mobile phones to new cars and Fred Olsen cruises, have become more dynamic, more noticeable, more digital.

Posters and billboards used to be dull and dreary, rarely getting our attention. Now, if you happen to be strolling through a shopping mall, waiting in departures at an airport or even filling up with gas, chances are a flat screen display will be flashing images and adverts trying to sell you something. This new method of out of home advertising, known as digital signage in advertising industry circles, is big business, worth $3.5 billion in the US alone, and the market is expected to grow exponentially, meaning more and more display screens will be selling, promoting and flashing branding messages at us when we are out and about.

Interactive aspects

Many of these screens aren't just playing TV style adverts either. Some are utilizing touch screen technology, QR codes and even facial recognition technology, bringing the world of science fiction films such as the Minority Report right into our shopping malls. The potential for this new digital advertising is huge. Retailers can store and share our buying habits so when we pass a digital signage display, advertisers can tailor content based on our retail history, personalizing it, aiming it directly at us. Farfetched? Not really, facial recognition systems that do just that gave already been trialed in that technology melting pot of Japan. And with technologies such as glasses free 3D in development, we may find adverts literally jumping out at us, as we shop, catch flights or wait in line at the pharmacy.

Of course, this brings up questions of privacy and data confidentiality, but with the growth of social media, in which our browsing details are constantly being sold as a normal commodity, there may be no stopping advertisers from gaining access to our buying habits. And who can blame them. Since the rise of the Internet, advertising has become an increasingly fragmented industry. With sales of newspapers and magazines on the decline, and web advertising not being as effective as advertisers had once hoped, using digital technology to gain our attention when we are out of the home may be more effective than traditional methods of marketing and promotion.

Even in our cars, we can't get away from this digital revolution in outside advertising. Giant LCD and plasma screens have started to replace the traditional billboards along the highways of the United States. And while this has caused some consternation, with opponents suggesting they pose a distraction to drivers, the same qualms aren't felt in Europe and Japan, where giant screens are regularly seen alongside some of the busiest and fastest highways leading into cities such as London, Tokyo and Berlin.

One thing that is definitely changing, however, is the look of the locations where these screens are installed. Vibrant, HD technology provides a modern, state-of-the art aesthetic, lighting up the landscape and providing more dynamic and vibrant cities and towns compared to the ripped and faded posters and billboards that have traditionally tried to get our attention in these areas. Even famous outdoor advertising spots such as Times Square in New York are replacing the neon and bulb lighting that once illuminated the night, with more modern digital displays, that enable moving images and provide a more modern backdrop to the famous Manhattan intersection.

These make enormous profits within a span of 2 months by luring the customers with attractive costumes, decoration items, cadies and carved pumpkins. Much ado has been made of the recent moves by ERP vendors Oracle and SAP to acquire their way into the SaaS space. It is indeed high time that the big ERP players embrace cloud computing. Certainly, the value of cloud-based Software-as-a-Service has not been lost on next generation software and solutions players—nor, more importantly—on its users at global businesses of all sizes. Further, businesses haven't limited their SaaS investments just to sales and human capital management like the recent acquisition examples of RightNow and SuccessFactors. Ironically, in the supply chain arena, for at least the last five years, it has been the new breed of SaaS player that has actually added more value to the very on-premise systems where Oracle and SAP dominate. Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) which informs better supply chain agility, is all about bringing together the planning process across demand and supply organizations for a single view of the truth to make better business decisions. While the process of S&OP has been in place for a few decades, it hasn't been until the last few years that technology—especially easy to access, implement and configure SaaS-based technology—has enabled companies to unite the disparate ERP, CRM, SCM, BI and Finance systems data to achieve their S&OP priorities. Indeed some of the world's largest, most complex manufacturers are trusting cloud-based S&OP solutions to help them harmonize their ERP and other rigid, on premise systems and, in turn, become more agile organizations, able to cope with today's volatile business environment. Since cloud computing solutions have been delivering better business leverage from ERP systems, it is time that ERP vendors give cloud computing the credit it deserves and has rightly earned.
